…the old and the new…

…strolling in the mild Madanian winter sun on the northern side of Masjid Nabawi where extensive road works are in progress with the foundations of the Ring Road being made…on one side of Sitteen Street is the old dilapidated, but still functioning older area…contrasted with the mushrooming of hotels on the Haram side of the street…photos in the same sequence of the strolling…so many of the smaller businesses carrying out renovations…sorry, no time for further comments…but do ask if you want details…

All good is from Allah Ta’ala whereas mistakes are from this humble speck. May Allah Ta’ala Bless all readers, bringing you all closer to Him and His Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam.  May He accept our humble efforts and grant us the capacity to be good and do good. Ameen.

…the sun rises over what was the position of Banu Hashim, the tribe our Beloved Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam was born into…the external features of this blessed place have been transformed over and over during the centuries, but it is the same sun that rises and the same of patch earth that witnessed the miraculous birth…the building marking where our Lady Aminah RadhiAllahu anha would have been patiently waiting for her first born is seen nestled in the distance…

…as Rabi’al Awwal approaches, the imagination zooms back, trying to embrace all the amazing events that led to the birth of the last and final Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam…

…Shaykh Sa’ad’s brilliant Seerah series details the noble lineage of RasuluLlah: here focusing on details of Banu Hashim, and here, on the Emergence of Shaybah…

…Habib Ali Al Jifri (may Allah Ta’ala preserve him and all his family) shares some of the most fascinating occurrences that Allah Ta’ala manifested during the year of the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam’s birth…SubhanAllah!

…Insha’Allah do spare the time over these next few weeks to engage the heart through these videos, reading Seerah, the Shifa’ and Shamaa’il as preparation for the month of Rabi’al Awwal and Insha’Allah set aside time with family, friends and loved ones enumerating the major events that preceded the miraculous birth.

…many trace the Prophetic lineage back to Adam Alaihis Salam, as seen in the above Tree…while many say that there are doubts with some of the links. This is another chart…but the majority agree that the genealogy traced back to Adnan is authentic…Allahu ‘Alum…

…the above is a method used to memorize the lineage back to Adnan…apparently there is a recording of Shaykh Hamza Yusuf reciting this…

…the following is an activity to assist our younger ones with learning the lineage and embracing the wealth and wisdom of our Noble Nabi SallAllahu alaihi wasallam’s ancestry…

…print and/or write the names from Adnan to Muhammad (refer to the above chart link for the names)… either directly onto coloured card, or as seen here, pasted on…cut pictures from old magazines, calendars etc, or children’s art work: drawings, paintings, patterns can be used for the contrasting sides…it may be preferred to write the names in Arabic…

…this example used three strips to make each name…gluing the corners of each of the three strips together, then folding the completed strips in the middle forming a three pointed shape…leaving the centre free of glue so a ribbon, string, wool or tape can be threaded through the middle…

…this method forms a three dimensional mobile, making quite a statement hanging from a door frame or appropriate high place as it is long…

…just as effective and serving the purpose of learning the list is to make each name a flat double sided piece which would not take as much time or as many resources…part of the activity with such a list is the sharing time in the making with the end visual effect that encourages the desire to memorize…

…the concept can be extended for older children whereby from their research they could write facts about each of the ancestors on one of the sides…

…sing the list as you create…and soon Insha’Allah the home/class will be swaying with the rhythm of the noble lineage…

…born inside the Ka’abah…

…goose-bumpy…that’s how it is when pondering on the way Allah Ta’ala has planned, is planning and continues to plan…

…a child born in the Ka’abah…the only one ever from the entire history of mankind…approximately five years before our Beloved Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam…he was from a very affluent family and possessed a sharp intellect…they developed a lasting friendship…time passes…as an adult he purchases a slave from the famous Okaz market place…gifting it to his Aunt…the sister of his father Hazm…the Aunt…is our Noble Lady Khadija RadhiAllahu anha…who marries Muhammad ibn ‘Abdullah and gifts her slave boy…Zayd, to her newly wed husband SallAllahu alaihi wasallam…Hakim ibn Hizam RadhiAllahu anhu was that blessed child to be born inside the Ka’abah…and how could the only one ever to be blessed with such an entry into the world never be destined to be given Hidayah…but it was not until almost twenty years after Prophethood, during the time of Conquest of Makkah that his heart finally submitted…SubhanAllah…goose-bumpy!

Just as we are astonished at the late acceptance of Islam on the part of Hakim, he himself later in life was also amazed. In fact, as soon as he accepted Islam and tasted the sweetness of iman (faith), he began to feel deep regret for every moment  of his life as a mushrik and a denier of God’s religion and of His Prophet.
His son once saw him weeping after his acceptance of Islam and asked: “Why are you weeping, my father’?” “Many things cause me to weep, my dear son. The most grievous is the length of time it took for me to become a Muslim. Acceptance of  Islam would have given me so man opportunities to do good which I missed even if I were to have spent the earth in gold.  My life was spared at the battle of Badr and also at the battle of Uhud. After Uhud. I said to myself. I would not help any  Quraysh against Muhammad, may the peace and blessings of God be upon him, and I would not leave Makkah. Then, whenever I felt like accepting Islam I would look at other men among the Quraysh. Men of power and maturity who remained  firmly attached to the ideas and practices of Jahiliyyah and I would fall in line with them and their neighbors… Oh, how I wish I had not done so. Nothing has destroyed us except the blind following of our forefathers and elders. Why should I not  weep, my son?”

Hakim ibn Hazm performed the Hajj after becoming a Muslim. He took with him one hundred fine camels and sacrificed them all in order to achieve nearness to God. In the following Hajj, he stood on Arafat. With him were one hundred slaves. To each  he gave a pendant of silver on which was engraved: “Free for the sake of God Almighty from Hakim ibn Hazm.” On a third Hajj, he took with him a thousand sheep – yes a thousand sheep and sacrificed them all at Mina to feed the poor Muslims in order to attain nearness to God.

Two additional inspiring incidents from Hakim ibn Hazm RadhiAllah anhu’s life, firstly, from before he embraced Islam, at the time when the Quraysh boycotted the Muslims.

One day Abu Jahl, who was continually on the look out for those trying to assist the Muslims, met Hakim, RadhiAllahu anhu with a slave carrying a bag of flour, and they appeared to be making for the dwellings of the Bani Hashim. He accused them of taking food to the enemy and threatened to denounce Hakim before Quraysh. While they were arguing, Abu l-Bakhtari, another man of Asad, came and asked what was the matter, and when it was explained to him he said to Abu Jahl: “It is his Aunt’s flour and she hath sent to him for it. Let the man go on his way.” Neither Hakim nor Abu -Bakhtari were Muslims, but the passing of this bag of flour from one member of the clan of Asad to another could concern no one outside that clan. The interference of the Makhzumite was outrageous and intolerable; and when Abu Jahl persisted Abu l-Bakhtari picked up a camel’s jaw bone and brought it down on his head with such force that he was half stunned and fell to the ground, whereupon they trampled him heavily underfoot, to the gratification of Hamzah RadhiAllahu anhu who happened to come by at that moment.

And secondly after his Hidayah:

Abu Hiam says that they had never heard of anyone in Madinah who provided more transport for people proceeding in the path of Allah than Hakim bin Hizm RadhiAllahu anhu. Two Bedouins once came to Madinah to ask for someone to provide them with transport to proceed in the path of Allah. When they were directed to Hakim bin Hizm RadhiAllahu anhu they approached him while he was with his family. When he asked them what they required and they duly informed him, he told them not to be hasty and to wait until he comes out to see them. (When he came out) He was wearing clothing that was brought from Egypt. It resembled a spider’s web and cost four dirhams. He took his staff with him and his slaves also accompanied him. Each time he passed by a rubbish dump he used the end of his staff to pick up any piece of cloth that could be used to patch the satchels of the camels going out in the path of Allah. He would then dust off the cloth and hand it over to his slave saying: “Keep this piece of cloth to mend the satchels.”

One of the Bedouins said to the other: “Oh dear! Save us from him! By Allah! All this man has with him are pieces of cloth from rubbish dumps.” The other said: “Shame on you! Do not be hasty. Let us first wait and see.” Hakim bin Hizm RadhiAllahu anhu then took them to the market place where he saw two large, fat pregnant she camels. He purchased them along with their supplies and said to his slave: “Use the  pieces of cloth to mend any of the satchels that need mending.” Thereafter he loaded on the camels some food , wheat and fat, Furthermore he gave the two men money for their expenses and made over the camels to them. The one Bedouin then said to his companion: “By Allah! I have never seen a better collector of cloth pieces than this man!”

…Jabal Uhud from above…

…Brother Shahid (comment on Jabal Uhud make over) was blessed to be in Madinatun Nabi recently when he was told by his guide that the word ‘Muhammad’ appears as part of the geographical feature on the aerial perspective of Jabal Uhud…and Allahu ‘Alum…and regardless of whether one can discern the noble name ‘Muhammad’, or even ‘Allah’ as some have also said, Jabal Uhud is positioned over one of the gates of Jannah, SubhanAllah, and as Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, Jabal Uhud loves us and we love it…and as previously written ‘Babul Jannat in its noble grandeur emanates such a glow (see Jabal Uhud glowing in these photos) and love’…and it is the mountain that trembled when the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman RadhiAllahu anhum stood on it…the presence of the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, the Siddiq, and two martyrs overwhelming it…such beauty Allah Ta’ala has bestowed upon this Radiant City…such profound love He has for this small area within His vast Universe…such a blessing to look upon it, whether in reality or through photos…may the heart swoon not matter how we may contemplate its grandeur…

…even though these three high resolution images have been compressed for uploading the definition remains quite clear…they are all aligned with north being to the top and south to the bottom…

…this one includes the eastern lava track and to the west, left of the dissecting roads far left is Jabal Habshi, where the Dajjal will stand with his army…

…the Uhud Shuhada area is directly north of Haram…with the cave our Blessed Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasalam was taken to when he was injured during the battle, directly north of that…

…and how often this majestic mountain is mentioned in Ahadith, SubhanAllah!

…Juma’ah gifts…

…an exquisite calligraphy, reflected in a softer hue, of a mirror image of one of Allah Ta’ala’s beautiful commands:

Allah and His Angels bless the Prophet, so, you who believe, bless him too and give him greetings of peace. (33:56)

…Divine Speech that carries multiple rewards, especially if practiced in varying degrees on Juma’ah…our Blessed Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasalla said:

Fridays are among the best of your days, so ask plentifully for prayers upon me on Fridays, for your prayers are presented to me.

Whoever asks for prayers upon me 100 times on a Friday will have eighty years of sins forgiven

Whoever asks for prayers upon me 100 times on a Friday will have a light on the Day of Resurrection that is sufficient to shine for all people.

Whoever recites these words seven times on each of seven consecutive Fridays, my intercession shall be wajib for him. The words are:

O Allah! Shower Salat on Muhammad and the family of Muhammad. Shower such blessings as pleases You and is due to him; and grant him the ‘maqam al-mahmood’ which You have promised him; and reward him on our behalf a due reward, better than You have ever rewarded a Nabi on behalf of his people. And send Salat on all his brothers among the Ambiyya and the righteous ones, O Merciful of all the merciful ones.

…Sayyiduna Bilal RadhiAllahu anhu…

…the sonorous rolling waves of Adhan pulse across Madinatun Nabi during these winter days as the thrum and whirr of air conditioners no longer pervades the air space…the acoustics from the Masjid Nabawi Muaththins is clearly audible above all the local masaajid…vibrating deep within the heart and soul…hardly an Adhan is called without thoughts of how it must have been when Sayyiduna Bilal RadhiAllahu anhu was calling people to prayer…calling them to success…the voice most loved by our Blessed Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam announcing the times for Salat…the Haram Adhan pierces the heart…so imagine the effect of the heavenly sound of Bilal’s voice…how the people of Madinah cried upon hearing him once again after his brief return from Shams the following the time of Al-Mustafa SallAllahu alaihi wasallam…imagine!

Sayyid al-Mu’azzineen (Leader of the Mu’azzins), Imam al-Aashiqeen, The great devotee, faithful companion and Mu’azzin of the beloved Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam, Hadrat Sayyiduna Bilal al-Habashi Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anhu is a famous and exalted Sahabi who accepted Islam in its early days in Makkah al-Mukarramah. When he accepted Islam, the non-believers placed great difficulties upon him which he bore with great forbearance in his youth. His father’s name was Rabah and his mother’s name was Hamamah.
His birth place is Abyssinia (Ethiopia) and this is why he is known as Habshi (the old name for Abyssinia is Habsh). Born in the late 6th century, the preferred view is that Bilal Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anhu was 43 years old at the time of Hijra but it has been suggested by some that he could have been as old as 53.
He was either a slave of a woman in Makkah who had made Umayyah bin Khalaf her agent in the matters of Hadrat Bilal or Umayya Ibn Khalaf himself when he accepted Islam. The Kaafirs of Makkah persecuted him severely. When Hadrat Abu Bakr Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anhu came to know about the pain and anguish which he underwent at the hands of the Kuffaar, he bought him and set him free. One of the many emancipated slaves of Abu Bakr Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anhu, Bilal Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anhu was known for his beautiful voice and was given the honour by the Holy Prophet Muhammad SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam of being the first Mu’azzin of Islam. He remained constantly in the company of beloved Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam. He was at the service of the needs of beloved Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam. Muhaddith Hakim and Hafidh Abu Nu’aym also regarded him as one of the Ashaab of al-Suffah.
After he had accepted Islam, he participated with beloved Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam in the battle of Badr and in all other battles. He called the Adhaan and he was the Mu’azzin of Masjid al-Nabawi as long as he remained with beloved Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam. His greatness and excellence is mentioned in numerous books of Ahadith.

One day at the time of Fajr, beloved Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam asked Hadrat Bilal Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anhu, ‘O Bilal, Show me one action that you have done after accepting Islam, whose virtue is above all other actions, because I have heard your footsteps in Jannah’. Hadrat Bilal Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anhu explains that I have not done any action whose virtue is more than the others. But it is true, that during the day or night, whenever I made Wudhu, I made it my duty to read some Nafl Salaah, and from amongst the Salaah I read, I verily read Tahiyyatul Wudhu (Salaat after Wudhu)” when beloved Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam heard this, he said that it was because of this action that he had attained such status.

…Maulana Rumi RahmatuLlahi alaihi penned the following poetic lines expressing his reaction to the torture and horror that Sayyiduna Bilal RadhiAllahu anhu endured at the hands of his Jewish master until he was freed by Abu Bakr Siddique RadhiAllahu anhu:

When Abu Bakr advised him towards silence and secrecy,
Bilal repented again,
But when love overwhelmed, he swallowed the repentance.
It is the message of the troubled heart.
Without You there can be neither peace nor comfort.

Beloved Mustafa embraced Bilal and held him against his chest. The ecstasy Bilal felt! Who can ever imagine that?

…Insha’Allah we are all blessed with hearing Sayyiduna Bilal RadhiAllahu anhu’s melodious voice when we are in Jannah…along with Prophet Dawud singing from the Zabur and our Beloved Prophet SallAllahu alauhu wasallam reciting Qur’an…culminating with Allah Ta’ala directly presenting us with His Divine Words…AMEEN AMEEN AMEEN!!

…may we reflect upon the honour and dignity of the esteemed first Muaththin…his unflinching testimony to the Oneness of Allah Ta’ala…and be inspired to boost our own proclamation of faith at this time of the anniversary of his demise…Insha’Allah…
