…towards Uhud 14 floors up…14 centuries back…

…as the eye sees it now…and how the heart’s gaze ponders some of the moving incidents from the past…

Masjid Abu Dhar…the road parallel to the right of this photo is where our Beloved Prophet and his army marched towards Jabal Uhud for the confrontation with the Quraysh…it was Juma’ah after the final decision to fight the battle outside of Madinah had been made…Rasulullah put two coats of mail on, but still some of the Sahabah RadhiAllahu anhum thought it best to remain within the city, but Rasulullah said: “It is not fitting that a prophet who has put on his armour should lay it aside until he has fought”…

…soon one thousand set off until they reached Al-Shaut, which was between Madinah and Uhud when ‘Abdullah ibn Ubayy cowardly withdrew his men, as did the waverers and doubters of ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibn Haram…leaving the devout to a mere 700 against approximately 3000 who were well equipped by comparison…

…the journey was not without incident…trying to take a route that would not pass near the Quraysh they passed by Banu Haritha which then entered the territory of the blind Mirba’ ibn Qaysa, who threw dust in the faces of the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam and some of the Sahabah RadhiAllahu anhum saying: “You may be the Prophet of Allah but I won’t let you through my garden!” The companions rushed to kill him but Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said: “Do not kill him for this blind man is blind of heart and blind of sight.”

Masjid Sheikhain marks the place where they spent time and made final plans for the attack…

…throughout the battle, the Prophet of forgiveness and mercy would often be seen raising his hands to the heavens with heart-felt prayer, even when he was bleeding profusely: “O Allah, forgive my people, for they do not know.”

…Anas ibn Nadr, the uncle of Anas ibn Malik RadhiAllahu anhaa had sworn allegiance at ‘Aqabah, but was full of regret as he had missed fighting at Badr. He said to Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam: “O Messenger of Allah, if Allah allows us to confront them once more, they will see what suffering I will inflict on them!” He fought fearlessly, especially when the Muslims suffered a reverse, and just before being martyred he told Mu’ath ibn Jabal with a smile, ‘By Allah I sense the fragrance of Jannah behind Uhud.’

Such Iman, such Ikhlas, SubhanAllah!

…also during the second stage of the battle ‘Abdullah ibn Jahsh RadhiAllahu anhu, the son of the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam’s paternal aunt, said to S’ad ibn Abi Waqqas: “Come on and pray, and I’ll say Ameen for your prayer and then I’ll pray and you say Ameen for mine.” Sa’d prayed: “O Allah, make me encounter one of the strongest enemy soldiers, and let me defeat him.” Ibn Jahsh said Ameen and then prayed: O Allah, let me encounter one of the strongest enemy soldiers, let him kill me, and cut off my ears, nose and lips so that I come to Your Presence bleeding profusely. You will ask me: ‘Abdullah where are your ears, nose and lips?’ and I will reply: ‘O Allah, I was ashamed to come to Your Presence with my limbs with which I has sinned, so I sacrificed them while fighting in the way of Your Beloved One.’”

His body was found with his ears, nose and lips cut off!

Such Iman, such Ikhlas, SubhanAllah!

…and here is a very early post on the Ghar Uhud where the Sahabah RadhiAllahu anhum carried our Blessed Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam after he was wounded in the battle…

…Insha’Allah you spend time this Juma’ah recollecting our glorious past as your eyes scan this Madanian horizon and making Du’a for the Ummah, especially for all in this Radiant City…

JUMA’AH MUBARAK!

All good is from Allah Ta’ala whereas mistakes are from this humble speck. May Allah Ta’ala Bless all readers, bringing you all closer to Him and His Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam.  May He accept our humble efforts and grant us the capacity to be good and do good. Ameen.

THE GREATEST VISION

SubhanAllah a straight line runs from the centre of the Yemeni side of the Ka’abah (the side facing the empty section of the Mataf in this image) directly to the Abode of Peace in Masjid Nabawi to the Dome of the Rock in Al-Quds…the path our Blessed Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam flew on Buraq with Gibril Alaihis Salam, then through all the Heavens to the final destination of being with his Lord beyond the Furthest Lote Tree on the night of the 27th Rajab.

During the Journey Rasulullah

came to a valley in which he breathed a sweet, cool breeze fragrant with musk and he heard a voice. He said: “What is this O Gibril?” He replied: ” This is the voice of Paradise saying:

O my Lord, bring me what you have promised me!

Too abundant are my rooms, my gold-laced garments,

My silk, my brocades, my carpets, my pearls, my corals,

My silver, my gold, my goblets, my bowls, my pitchers,

My couches, my honey, my water, my milk, my wine!

And the Lord says:

You shall have every single Muslim man and woman,

Every believing man and woman,

Everyone who has believed in Me and My Messengers

And did excellent deeds

Without associating a partner with Me

Nor taking helpers without Me!

Anyone who fears Me shall be safe,

And whoever asks of Me, I shall give him,

And whoever loans Me something, I shall replay him,

And whoever relies upon Me, I shall suffice him!

I am Allah beside Whom there is no God.

I never fail in My promise.

Successful indeed are the believers (23:1)

So blessed be Allah, the best of Creators! (23:14)

From a must title to be read annually at this time, Sayyid Muhammad ibn ‘Alawi al-Maliki’s The Prophet’s Night Journey and Heavenly Ascent.

The Greatest Vision from The Subtleties of the Ascension

One of them said: “The Real severed the secret heart of Muhammad SallAllahu alaihi wasallam from all changes. he gazed at his Lord with the eye of certainty, and he became realized in the lights of the Real until the eye of certainty returned to him the real-truth of certainty. He summoned up the face-to-face address with His saying, He revealed to His servant what He revealed.

“When He caused him to approach, he descended. He showed him he-ness and eliminated from him his I-ness. He cast down His traces, and He adorned him with His lights. Thus he was able to witness that witnessing. He never saw a created light above His light. It occupied him. For that reason nothing awed him and nothing pleased him after what he had witnessed, which God (be He exalted) recounted in His saying ‘Indeed he saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord.’ (53:18) And ‘his vision did not stray nor was it excessive’ (53:17) out of the exaltedness of His light and the purity of His trace.”

The connection between the vision if the Divinity and Muhammad’s mystical experience serves as the theme of this anonymous saying. The opening sentence signals the idea that Muhammad’s created and contingent nature was left behind when he witnessed and thus partook in the essence of the uncreated and eternal Divinity. The vision moves him to the final stage in what elsewhere in this work is described as a three-stage progression: the knowledge of certainty (‘ ilm yaqin) the eye of certainty (‘ayn al-yaqin) and the real truth of certainty (haqq al-yaqin), the distinction between the divine Real (al-Haqq) and his lover is blurred as the latter becomes realized (tahaqqaqa) in the lights of the Real. This anonymous saying equates this powerful visionary experience with crucial verses from the Surah of the Star.

Initially the saying cites the mysterious verse He revealed to His servant what He revealed (53:10) which highlights the vague language with which the exchange is described while underscoring the dichotomy between master and servant. However turning next to an earlier verse in the same passage, he approached and descended (53:8) the anonymous exegete describes the stripping away of Muhammad’s individual identity as divine qualities replace human qualities. While no actual union is spoken of here, the process of Divine “infusion” or more precisely “investiture” is portrayed as a necessary  step that makes possible the visionary experience that follows.

The image of Divine lights appears throughout this saying, both as a garment worn by the visionary and as the content of the vision. To a certain degree, the lights become both the subject and the object of the visionary experience. All created lights pale in comparison with these Divine lights, the anonymous master states, and thus after his experience Muhammad was never impressed by worldly things.

…smoking…and…

Shaykh Hamza Yusuf’s on his recent visit to our Mubarak City of Enlightenment witnessed, and subsequently wrote on his Sandala site about the lack of Adab in relation to smoking and the wastage of food in and around Haram.

So what is clear is that in the City of our Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, a smoker’s right to harm himself and others trumps a non-smoker’s right to be free from harm and to breathe the blessed and healing Medinan air.

There are non smoking signs…however many are so faded they are no longer recognizable, the majority placed in high positions and in obscure corners. But as Shaykh Hamza alludes to, if the heart doesn’t contain the will to address this addiction, nor respect to refrain whilst in the sacred precincts of the Haramain then signs will be totally ineffective.

All of the above signs are positioned on the many ablution blocks surrounding the Masjid, but all of these actions are violated…this speck being guilty of taking excessive photos! Not only bicycles are ridden in the courtyard but also motor bikes. Children come with all manner of things that set them in motion, to the total disregard of who they may ride into…skateboards and their ilk, roller blades, roller shoes, scooters and all and anything with wheels to push each other around on…wheelchairs, buggies, toy cars, or none of these are available then they use folding chairs to push about and crash into others.

And during the peak times of Ramadhan and Hajj all grills will be festooned with luggage tied to them. So much for signs!

This is the Aswaq Al-Haram arcade…or rather what WAS the Aswaq Al-Haram…all traders have disappeared and the rooms that were part of a hotel complex on the first floor are empty…the plan to convert the entire group of buildings into government offices has begun. Smoking signs are attached at regular intervals…

…but…this photo was taken seconds after the above one and it was not until I was viewing them that I noticed the brother in the green top was smoking right below the sign…and this typifies the lack of regard for any signs!

Look at these alarming drug smuggling statistics that were published just the other day…and do not be naive thinking that these drugs do not enter Makkah or Madinah, as they do! Astaghfirullah.

In October 2006 I wrote

The smoking issue has seen interesting developments over the past few years here. A committee has been set up outlining plans aiming at making Madinah the first smoke free city in the world! Originally they banned smoking within the confines of the courtyard fence, and prohibited all outlets, including supermarkets within the first ring road, to sell any tobacco related products. Billboards were erected on some of the major hotels discouraging smoking, as well as many smaller no smoking signs placed all around the Haram fence. The incidence of smoking within the first ring road is certainly less than a few years ago.

Then in the December Arab News reported ‘Anti Smoking Drive Takes to Madinah’

The Kingdom will take its anti-smoking drive to Madinah this year during the Haj season, according to a senior official in the Ministry of Health.

“For the past three years, we have been successfully carrying out an anti-smoking campaign in the holy city of Makkah and this year we are taking it to Madinah where pilgrims go to visit the Prophet’s Mosque,” Abdulaziz Al-Hudaithi from the ministry’s anti-smoking unit explained.

May 2007 the same old refrain ‘No Tobacco Program Begins Today’, committees formed, but no discernible changes in attitudes or a decrease in the smokers who form a veritable barrier of smoke and stink the minute they walk out of the Haram gates.

We have chosen Madinah for our launch to give a spiritual emphasis to the Kingdom wide program. Under this program, we hope to target students, men and women of all age groups,” he noted.
He added that the ministry is particular that Madinah should be maintained as a showcase for a smoke-free environment for the benefit of the pilgrims that flock there. A similar policy is being encouraged in Makkah as well.
The ministry has imposed a total ban on the sale of tobacco within the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah,” said Al-Bideihi. There are eight anti-smoking clinics in Madinah to help smokers give up their habit.

November 2010 ‘Holy Cities to be Tobacco Free’

It is estimated that in the Kingdom 35 to 40 percent of people above the age of 15 smoke. Around 24 percent of male students between the ages of 13 to 15 years smoke, while eight percent of female students smoke. The Kingdom joined the anti-tobacco agreement in May 2005. Saudi Arabia ranks fourth among world countries in tobacco imports and consumption. More than 15 billion cigarettes, worth $168 million, are smoked by Saudis each year, according to figures issued by the Gulf Cooperation Council’s Health Ministers Council.

So why not restrict, nay HALT, the import of tobacco…and confiscate supplies brought in by pilgrims…harsh action for a severe problem?

With Ramadhan soon upon us, closely followed by Hajj the annual articles addressing this issue will more than likely appear. Insha’Allah make efforts in your Du’a for those who are sufferers of addiction to take positive steps to eradicate the habit. May we despise the action but not the brother or sister, supporting their efforts to quit and may the Haramain to be cleansed of all actions that serve no benefit to the wayfarer to Allah Ta’ala’s Garden. Ameen.

If the Prophet’s sunnah in not practiced in his own city, where the beloved rests awaiting the day of judgment, tell me, where then will it be practiced?

…the streets echo their joyous giggles, their sweet innocence, a combined array of colour and drab, smudged with dust from the streets that are their playground…

…the majority of Madanian children live in enclosed apartment blocks, devoid of an airy balcony…

…many have their favourite haunts…secret corners where they meet regularly with friends playing invented games…

…discovering new things from rubbish piles, building materials or renovation discards…

…setting limits and boundaries as to who can join in…squabbling…competing in acts of bravado, daring and folly…

Kahlil Gibran’s words, also used in post from way back, epitomize the depths of love and understanding we need to try and nurture with the children in our midst.

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.

…Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam also said as part of a longer Hadith: “Near the time of Qiyamah the rich ones from amongst my Ummah will perform Hajj for the sake of travel and holiday…” (Kanzul Ummaal) It may not be Hajj, but Umrah reflects a similar attitude, which is even more evident when coinciding with the long summer break. This ‘holiday’ mode is very prevalent in Madinatun Nabi these days, and will become more so now that the majority of educational institutions have just completed the academic year…

…hot off the press…

The plush hotels and the malls being planned for Makka will
attract the attention of the celebrities and millionaires. They
will vie and compete for suites containing the best view of the
Ka’ba. Perhaps they will enjoy their sumptuous meals as they
listen to the stereophonic replication of the Imam’s voice being
piped into their palaces from below. Perhaps they will remember
that Hajj or ’Umrah are not spectator sports to be enjoyed from
afar like the World Cup Finals or the Super Bowl. They are acts
of worship to be undertaken with all due humility and sincerity.
Perhaps the tyrants and dictators being chased from their lands by
their exhausted minions will retire to Makka and live, not in the
shadow of the Ka’ba, but shadowing it.
Neither they nor their ilk tell us what Makka, the Ka’ba, Hajj,
’Umrah, visiting the City of the Prophet, worship, or Islam itself
are all about. They cannot. However, in the modest booklet in your
hand, you are gaining a glimpse of what it is about. Saying that, I
am not referring to the engaging description of the sights to be
seen or the monuments, both those extant or those that have been
systematically destroyed. I am referring to the spirit of equality that
has inspired Shaykh Abdul Aziz Ahmed to write a book dedicated
to those struggling with disabilities and to work with other well meaning
souls to arrange to bring a group of our disabled brothers
and sisters to visit the Holy Land and the sacred sites.

From Iman Zaid Shakir‘s forward.

In recent years there has been a trend in the West, and possibly
elsewhere, where visiting Makka is no longer a once in a lifetime
life-changing experience. It has become a regular occurrence
where each minor pilgrimage has different expectations. Some of
these trips are simply ‘a few days away’ to ‘recharge the batteries’
and ‘get away from it all’. There has also been a steady increase
in the number of ‘study visits’ where students use the minor
pilgrimage to study a set text or attend lectures under the tutelage
of a recognised teacher. The request of the blind sisters was a
result of such a study visit.
