…’look at nothing else’…

In the year 1079 AH, at the age of 35, Imam ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Alawi al-Haddad Rahmatullahi alaihi, a giant of Muslim spirituality, journeyed from Yemen for Hajj. His observations, and subsequent advices at the time are relevant for pilgrims today.

The Imam’s wisdom still radiates throughout the Islamic world through descendants and ‘Alawi masters who continue to guide and illuminate wayfarers along what can be an arduous Path to our Rabb. Mostafa al-Badawi’s rich biography of Imam al-Haddad, Sufi Sage of Arabia,

is a compelling testimony to the spiritual power and influence of the sanctified soul on the world. It is, perhaps more importantly for us, a step towards reintroducing the desperately needed path of sanctification. If there was ever a time that saints were needed, it is this time.

as stated by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf in his forward to the book.

The following passage comes as a timely reminder for us all:

There were repeated requests from the people of the two sanctuaries to remain with them. he said, “Makka is good for [only] one of three: a man totally obscure whom nobody knows and who is like the dust. That is, he cares nothing if trodden upon. A wanderer in the mountains as was Shaykh ibn al-Farid, or an ocean who is neither perturbed nor oppressed by the crowd that gathers around him, who is not distracted by them from God, and on condition that he is well steeped in the Book and sunna and their practical application. Such a man may remain in the two sanctuaries, take the goodness they offer and remain safe from their perils. As for a man of lesser stature, they will  preoccupy and weary him with worldly things and situations.
Another great ‘Alawi, Sayyid Muhammad Sheliye sent Imam al-Haddah a verbal message, instructing the messenger thus: “Tell him he is sending you his salam and advising you not to stay.” The messenger, who knew the Imam told the Sayyid, “He has no intention of doing so.” “Tell him nevertheless,” replied Sayyid Sheliye. The Imam answered him saying, “Staying is not on mind, We had never intended it to begin with because of what we saw of the behaviour of the people of the two sanctuaries.” Imam al-Haddad had never been inclined to allow infringements to go undenounced, and in the sacred land he was even less disposed to do so. HE told the people of Hijaz, “Were we to stay with you we would complain about you to the ruler because of what we observe of your condition.” And he advised the people to think well of the people of the Hijaz, and in order to be able to do so and maintain courtesy he told them, “In the two sanctuaries look at nothing except the Sacred House and the Blessed Chamber; look at nothing else.”

The beginning of the path is a powerful urge that is cast into the heart so as to disturb it and unsettle it and drive it to concentrate on God and the Last Abode and turn away from the world.

We were informed that a large group of Shaykh Mahmud Effendi’s (May Allah Ta’ala sanctify his secrets and continue raise his station) mureeds were present, Allahu ‘Alum if these brothers and sisters were from that Tariqa.

SubhanAllah, whoever they were, the Akhlaq and Adab was a joy for the heart and soul to see and be near. Their focus was a perfect example of ‘look at nothing else’ as they conducted themselves around Masjid Nabawi.

One of Imam ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Alawi al-Haddad Rahmatullahi alaihi’s sublime Du’as, from Abdulkarim Yayha’s site:

O Allah! aid, guide and grant me (tawfiq) success to refine the qualities of my soul and clarify its density; through spiritual exertion that overcomes and effaces egoistic (nafsi) frivolities and subdues desirous motives; which is adorned by constant presence with Allah, Mighty and Majestic and the quality of good manners on the carpet of lowliness, brokenness, poverty and absolute need; thus realizing slavehood and fulfilling the rights of Lordship. Indeed You have power over all things.

All good is from Allah Ta’ala whereas mistakes are from this humble speck. May Allah Ta’ala Bless all readers, bringing you all closer to Him and His Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam.  May He accept our humble efforts and grant us the capacity to be good and do good. Ameen.

…and thus it is that time goes by…

Time is endless in Thy hands, my Lord.
There is none to count Thy minutes.

Days and nights pass and ages bloom and fade like flowers.
Thou knowest how to wait.

Thy centuries follow each other perfecting a small wild flower.

We have no time to lose,
and having no time we must scramble for a chance.
We are too poor to be late.

And thus it is that time goes by
while I give it to every querulous man who claims it,
and Thine altar is empty of all offerings to the last.

At the end of the day I hasten in fear lest Thy gate be shut;
but I find that yet there is time.

Rabindranath Tagore

…and thus it was that time has gone by over these past weeks of absence from this space…time spent with loved ones who have since returned to their respective countries, Insha’Allah with vast supplies of Nur and Barakah to share with all they reunite with…

…meanwhile a small window of time opens…of trying to catch up before the arrival of others seeking solace in these Sacred Lands…and to offer a little sharing…

…newly installed light fixtures line many of the roads immediately surrounding Haram…

…pilgrims shop…may they find the gates are not shut at the end of the day…because thus it is that time goes by…

On the Day they see it, it will seem they lingered [in this life] an evening at most, or a morning. (79:46)

On the Day He gathers them together, it will be as if they have stayed  [in the world] no longer than a single hour, and they will recognize one another. (10:45)

…vendors crowd the area beside Jannatul Baqi where many shop while others, after Asr, pay respects to the residents within the Mubaark dust…

…as commandos, police and the Haia keep guard…

…especially of sisters who are faced with a shoulder to shoulder wall of uniformed security…

…entry to the viewing area for sisters is blocked very early after Asr once a maximum number is admitted…

…more the pity that the invasion of Sponge Bob is not blocked from entering Haram and the courtyard, which is an extension of Masjid Nabawi…children are not the only ones influenced by this trend, all manner of items are being worn, hanging around necks, on arms and feet, toys to occupy them while Salat is being offered, but adults too have it dangling from mobile phones and handbags!

…and thus it is that time goes by…and thus it is that time goes by…and thus it is that time goes by…

…during this time away I have witnessed some of the ugliest and most depressing scenes ever in and around Haram…may Allah Ta’ala instill within all who have accepted His most blessed invitation the realization that, unlike Tagore’s words, we can never be sure ‘that yet there is time’…

…rather…

We have no time to lose,
and having no time we must scramble for a chance.
We are too poor to be late.

At the end of the day I hasten in fear lest Thy gate be shut;

O Allah, I ask You to grant me faith that dwells in my heart. And I ask You to grant me true certitude in belief so that I know that I will encounter only what You have preordained for me, and that whatever I have encountered would never have missed me, and that whatever I have missed would never have come about.

O Allah, the Living, the Eternal Controller and Sustainer of all things, Originator of the heavens and the earth. You are the Full Holder of all Majesty and Honour. There is no God but You. I seek refuge in Your Mercy.  Amend for me all my affairs, and surrender me not to my own self, not for even the twinkling of an eye.

Ameen.

…same time…same place…

…as the fiery sky two days earlier …Allah Ta’ala’s artistry paints Madinatun Nabi with a delicate calm…the pinky tuft of cloud strung across the eastern sky appeared as if revealing the essence of these Divine Words as a profound reminder for the Ummah during these months of unrest and fitan:

And hold fast to the rope of Allah, everyone, and do not split up. And remember Allah’s favour to you: for you were enemies, and Allah united your hearts, so you became brethren by the grace of Allah. And you were on the brink of a pit of fire, and Allah rescued you from it. Thus does Allah manifest signs of the Divine to you, that you may be guided. (3:103)

…and the Jumadi Oola six moon glides through a clear blue canopy…

…while yesterday, the eve of the eleventh, Allah Ta’ala’s palette dramatically changed to the monochromatic tones of a severe dust storm…

…same time…same place…sitting with different visiting sisters…and totally different scenes…SubhanAllah!

…on the way to Haram…

…each breath seemingly choking on the density of the dust…parched throats quenched with the elixir of Zamzam, Alhuhumdulillah…

…earlier in the morning from the kitchen window…

…regardless of the diverse and ever changing conditions, the sentiments expressed in the following words will forever be constant, as the seeker approaches:

the plain of Madinah becomes light upon light and one’s eyes are dazzled

This year marks the 400th anniversary of the birth of the world’s least-known great traveler, a man who visited the ends of the earth for the sheer pleasure of doing so. For Evliya Çelebi, court favorite of the Ottoman sultan and a native son of his beloved Istanbul, the ends of the earth were the western, eastern, southern and northern boundaries of the Ottoman Empire, and at the time of his death, probably in the year 1683…

Intercession, O Messenger of God SallAllahu alaihi wasallam…Ameen Ameen Ameen,

a slightly belated

JUMA’AH MUBARAK!

…Alhumdulillah for the throngs answering the call for Umrah this year, Masha’Allah. Barely a day passes without receiving the glad news of ones coming. May Allah Ta’ala open doors for this humble speck to offer Khidmah, along with Barakah in time to maintain some sort of presence here for all who frequent this cyberspace as well :) It’s all a little overwhelming at the moment.

Ameen.

…as-sama’…

It is Allah who sends out the winds; they stir up the clouds; He spreads them over the skies as He pleases…(30:48)

…these two discs have just been installed…not sure of their purpose?

…even if words of praise would equal the number of drops in the clouds at any given second, it still would not be enough to praise our Beloved Al-Mustafa SallAllahu alaihi wasallam…

The sun of guidance was born,

and the entire universe was illumined.

A smile appeared on the lips of time,

and his praises were sung.

Ahmad Shawky

SubhanAllah!!!! dramatic is an understatement for what the Madanian skies have been treating us with these past few days…the sunsets this evening just before Maghrib…I have never seen such effects…none of these photos have been altered, and this is the sequence they were taken…SubhanAllah!

…now back to a few more days of ‘hiding’…just had to share these…

…busy-ness…

…it’s that time again…

…when trying to juggle too many things results in assessing one’s commitments…

…when corners of the home are cluttered with a a creative mess, though this time with a different outcome, Insha’Allah explanations posted in the future…

…when the dull constant whirring of air conditioners encroach upon the sound waves of this City of Peace and Radiance…

…when the temperature button is turned up with each passing day…heading for months of summer sizzle…

…when special visitors arrive in waves, Masha’Allah…

…when the special needs of others requires immediate attention, Alhumdulillah…

…when small fragments of moments of reflection are essential: from Shaykh ad-Darqawi’s  Letters of a Sufi Master

If you wish what you need to be given to you without your having to search for it, turn away from it and concentrate on your Lord; you will receive it if God wills. And if you gave up your needs entirely and were occupied only with God, He would give you all the good things you wish for in this world and in the other; you would walk in Heaven as well as on the earth; and more than that, since the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam has said, in the very words of his Lord: (Hadith Qudsi) “he who by remembering Me (dhikr) is distracted from his petitioning will receive more than those who ask.”

Hear, faqir, what I said to one of our brothers (may God be well pleased with them): every time I was lacking something, great or small, and turned away from it in turning toward my Lord, I found it there in front of me, thanks to the power of Him who hears and knows. We see that the needs of ordinary people are filled by paying attention to them, whereas the needs of the elect are filled by the very fact that they turn away from them and concentrate upon God.

Greetings of Peace!
