…ibbil…

…random, rambling thoughts…vaguely stitched together by the sight, smell and sound of these camels…such is the workings of grey matter when its machinations are given permission to wander…dream…remember…

…to recall times long gone…and places so far away…loving the rhythmic cycle of milking goats…the intimacy of living with farm animals that provided natural goodness…commodities to barter for cow’s milk cream in order to churn butter…shearing fleece from docile sheep, spinning and dying with bush flora…honey from hives…seasonal veggies…free range eggs…all this flooded the inner screen on this nostalgic visit…

…as I stood in the crisp dawn desert air…moments from where Qaswa, following Divine Command, knelt at Hudaybiyyah…feasting on the tales of solitude and the simplicity of oneness with nature…whispered by the wind that was playfully billowing niqab and abaya…a yearning was stirred…a yearning that usually lives in some deep recess…rarely allowed expression…a yearning to spend time on the land…specifically with a camel…or some…

…what seems like centuries and yet seconds ago…I taught an extremely talented student art…she gave me a magnificent ink drawing of the detail of a camels face……I can still clearly see that drawing…but not her…she died as a young lady while searching for meaning in India…

…an affinity for animals seems an obvious disposition given I was raised on a farm…with ancestors and relations living ‘off the land’…love for camels began a little later as a young inquisitive child…intrigued by the exotic tales of turbaned Afghan cameleers arriving in the wide, and wild expanses of the vast Australian interior from mysterious places only known as coloured smudges in a faded atlas…decades later, they have multiplied to be a feral scourge…the Saudis trying to fathom out how to save them from culling and ship them back to their original habitats…

…fascinating that Allah Ta’ala asks:

Don’t they see the camels, how they are made? (88:17)

…not a kangaroo, giraffe, rhino or wombat…how noble to be singled out by Allah Ta’ala…certainly a verse that attracts refection and invites one to study the characteristics of the camel…how honoured was it to be the favoured means of transport by our Blessed Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam…if these creatures stir passions now, imagine the joy and elation of seeing Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam astride Qaswa…swoon…

…imagine when the Hajj season saw multitudes of them ambling around the sacred precincts…or the image of thousands engaged in trade…war…raids…or merely munching on bitter scrubby thorn bushes…their weird padded feet anchoring the ‘ship of the desert’…the double row of eye lashes…the extra membrane that they can pull over their eye to keep sand out…nostrils they can shut to keep the sand out…oval shaped red blood cells so even if they are dehydrated their blood keeps flowing…

…and their nutritious milkwhy we should drink it…and according to Hadith, the curative effects of their urine…camel milk soap

their beauty…their racing abilities….camel milk chocolate fashioned in their shape…and more and more

and more facts here...

…camel Kabsa, a traditional Saudi feast…feast your eyes here…but not here if you are squirmish…

as faithful friendsas a pet (clip with music)…

…as a means of livelihood for many expats…mainly Sudanese, as they can happily contend with the harsh and lonely existence…

…the following photos were recently taken in the desert near Madinah Al-Munawwarah…

…with more from the camel archives

Don’t they see the camels, how they are made?

…choreography and catastrophe…

…these rituals devoted to maintaining the pristine environment of Masjid Al-Haram enthrall with their energetic and balletic enthusiasm…with the added dimension of devotion…SubhanAllah…

…from this daily choreographed display using tons of cubic metres of water, where every space within and around the courtyard of Masjid Al-Haram is meticulously cleaned…

…to this repeated catastrophe involving powerful volumes of water…

In just three hours Wednesday morning Jeddah was inundated with 111 millimeters of rain, the King Abdulaziz University’s (KAU) Meteorology Department said.

Mansour Al-Mazrouie, head of the department, said Wednesday’s volume of rainfall exceeded the 90 mm recorded in four hours during the Nov. 25, 2009 flash floods that killed at least 123 people and damaged thousands of vehicles and homes.

The average amount of rain during the winter months (November to January) is about 51mm.

When one sees photos, reads of the destruction, disruption, death, and hears from Jeddawis how the utter chaos has affected the sinking Bride of the Sea, one wonders what planet the ‘authorities’ are on…“things will return to normal in 24hours!!!!!!!!” Astaghfirullah.

The road between Makkah and Jeddah has been closed, with hotels in Jeddah full of Umrah pilgrims who have been unable to journey to Makkah. Children and students have been stranded in schools and colleges over night, unable to exit flooded buildings, while the individual stories of loss, fear, frustration break ones heart.

Insha’Allah use this Juma’ah to make fervent Du’a for the people and the situation in Jeddah. May Allah Ta’ala’s Mercy over ride His Wrath. Also spare some words for the expertly choreographed Haramain cleaners.

JUMA’AH MUBARAK!

…rain…

His wealth will not ignore a dusty hand.

Showers bring flowers to arid hilltops.

The Mantle Adorned, verse 150.

…SubhanAllah the rains have been unprecedented this year. If showers bring flowers to arid hilltops, then these downpours bring forests to paved streets…

…the following photos were on two different days of Makkan rains, apart from chaos on the day of arriving.

Mercy rains and thunder claps graced Madinatun Nabi last night, but not to the extent that the Bride of the Sea, Jeddah is currently flooded. Reports from friends saying traffic in some areas has been at a stand stil for hours and the Makkah/Jeddah road closed with warnings to drivers not to attempt to enter Jeddah unless absolutely necessary. Many schools warned parents not to send children to school, even though it is exam time, while other schools sent students home without them finishing their exams.

It was related to me that one of the signs heralding the End of Times is that rains will no longer be harbingers of mercy, but will be a punishment, bringing destruction and devastation. And Allah Ta’ala knows best. Astaghfirullah.

May we seriously reflect upon the severity of the conditions that are across the world and shift our attention from all that is not favoured by Allah Ta’ala to all that He loves from us, Ameen.

O Allah we cry to You, and we implore
You not to turn us away from Your door
For we are drowning, rescue us to the shore
Send Your blessings on us like a downpour

…transforming Makkah…one…

…one thousand plus shots were taken during the last visit…and its been a long, slow process posting…all manner of things have been consuming time, Alhumdulillah…Insha’Allah the next few posts will focus mainly on photos of the rapidly changing scenes around Masjid Al-Haram…this series is basically chronological,  spanning a night and a day…

…after Esha…

…after Fajr…

…this was such a moving scene…not a brilliant photo, but SubhanAllah an incredibly emotional and inspiring moment…construction workers heading off to work…groups came in waves…stood at this entrance where the Ka’aba in all its magnificence and beauty is directly ahead…they stood raising hands in Du’a…then moved on…the silence seemed to be drumming loud with humility…so shy even thinking of taking a photo…hesitating for long before I quickly snapped…may Allah Ta’ala forgive this intrusion…the things one does for a blog…uuummmmm…but what amazing dedication to the task they are devoted to…sacrificing so much for the extension of the heart of Islam…may Allah Ta’ala reward them all, along with families they have left as they serve the Ummah , Ameen Ameen Ameen…

…a dusty blurry capture…the constant line of trucks bumper to bumper waiting to take the mountain away…

…throughout the day various groups of workers would gather in the courtyard…some waiting to begin their duty…others completing a shift…at Zuhur time thousands would be stretched out resting weary backs…their heavy work boots providing a pillow as they wait for Salat…

…the road between the Hilton and the Abraj Al-Bayt is strung with colourful protective sheets as construction work is in progress overhead…

…adding an ‘arty installation’ touch…

…the view of THE clock while hanging out (literally) from the fifth floor hotel window…uuummmm…Insha’Allah you are not bored, as there is more to follow :)

…sunrise at Hudaybiyyah…

Allah was certainly pleased with the believers when they pledged loyalty under the tree, knowing what was in their hearts, sending tranquility down on them…(48:18)

…the tree has long gone but the tranquility abounds where Qaswa refused to budge, responding to Divine Will, indicating where Allah Ta’ala’s Beloved Messenger SallAllahu alaihi wasllam and his 1,400 or so Sahabah RadhiAllahu anhum should camp while tense negotiations were shuffled back and forth between this desolate plain and Makkah, when the Quraysh refused them permission to perform Umrah…

…how many sunrises have risen over this long dried up well since our Blessed Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasllam arrived there in the sixth year AH…Alhumdulillah for the opportunity to reflect upon this and allow the imagination to take flight and conjure the scene with all in Ihram, anticipating performing Umrah, garlanded sacrificial animals gathered around, desert winds mercilessly blowing sand and dust in makeshift tents and the anxiety of waiting for the results of tense negotiations…the ingredients for VICTORY! SubhanAllah!

May Allah Ta’ala’s perpetual peace and blessings be upon them all, to the number of every sunrise and every sunset, every grain of shifting sand on this scene of victory, and for each and every footprint made from Madinah and back, multiplied by the same again, Ameen…

…this very well was almost dry then, provoking many of the companions to ask how they and their camels would survive without water. Some narrations explain that Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam drew an arrow from his quiver instructing one of the cameleers, either Najiyah ibn Jundub or Bara ibn Aazib to place the arrow in the well, whereupon water rose, which sufficed them for the duration of their twenty day stay. Another account, reported in Bukhari that Bara RadhiAllahu anhu said that our Beloved Prophet SallAllahu alaihi  wasallam sat on the edge, requested a vessel with water and attar, performed ablution, rinsed his mouth, supplicated and poured water into the well, with the result that there was sufficient for all their needs. While Jabir RadhiAllahu anhu said that Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi  wasallam put his hand in a utensil after which water began to pour from his fingers. Later Saalim asked Jabir how many benefited from this water. He was told fifteen hundred but that there was enough for a hundred thousand men (Ibn Katheer) SubhanAllah!

…the final treaty that both parties agreed upon meant the Muslims had to abandon their Ihram and thus sacrifice the animals they had brought along with them with the intention of Umrah and shave their heads. Understandably the Sahabah RadhiAllahu anhum, due to their sadness and feeling defeated were reluctant to do so, and did not respond to the initial request of the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. It was the wise and comforting suggestion by our Lady Umm Salamah RadhiAllahu anha, that Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam go ahead with sacrificing his animal and shaving his head, when the Shahabah RadhiAllahu anhum began to follow his example.

…two different markers designating the boundary of the sacred precincts…looking towards the direction of Makkah, where hundreds of eyes must have squinted during the events of Hudaybiyyah, especially when the rumour was spreading that Uthman RadhiAllahu anhu had been killed…

…King Abdul Aziz erected this watering system adjacent to the border…

…the inscribed plaque is still intact…but this well is also now dry…

The Treaty:

1. “In Your Name, O Allah”

2. This is what Muhammad ibn Abdullah has agreed upon with Suhail ibn ‘Amr.

3. Both have agreed to put a hold on the war between the people (of Makkah and Madinah) for a period of ten years, during which time people will live safely and will refrain from harming one another.

4. Whosoever of the companions of Muhammad comes to Makkah to perform Hajj or Umrah, or with the hope of gaining from the Blessings of Allah (i.e, goes to Makkah to engage in trade), then he is safe, both in his blood and in his wealth. And whosoever from the Quraysh goes to Madinah, passing through it in order to go to Egypt or Ash-Sham, and hoping to gain from the blessing of Allah, then he is safe both in his blood and in his wealth.

5. if anyone from Quraysh goes to Muhammad without the permission of his guardian, then Muhammad has to send him back. And if anyone that is with Muhammad goes to Quraysh, they do not have to send him back.

6. We will abide by the terms of the treaty; none of us will steal from one another or act treacherously with one another.

7. Any third party that wants to enter into an agreement or alliance with Muhammad has the right to do so. And any third party that wants to enter into an agreement or alliance with the Quraysh has the right to do so.

8. You (O Muhammad) have to return this year without entering Makkah; next year, however, we will leave (Makkah) for you, you may enter it with your Companions and remain in it for three days. You can carry with you the weapons that a rider carries (and no more): swords in scabbards. And you will not enter with any other weapons.

…on their return journey to Madinah Surah Al-Fath was revealed to our Beloved Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. He was so happy that he said: “Last night a Chapter that is more beloved to me than all the sun shines upon was revealed to me.” He recited:

Verily We have granted you a clear victory. (48:1)

which sent waves of joy and understanding from among many who had thought they had been cheated and defeated…
