…the lamp of the people of Jannah…

The ‘island’ of Masjid ‘Umar!

Thousands of Sahabah RadhiAllahu anhum gathered here to pray behind Ameer al-Mu’mineen Sayyiduna ‘Umar al-Farooq RadhiAllahu anhu for Eid Salat.

And soon thousands of pilgrims will be accommodated in the lofty buildings that will hover over this site, dwarfing the humble monument to monumental moments from our history.

Alhumdulillah nothing will ever diminish from his shining example and his legacy to the Ummah.

There are four types of oceans-passion is the ocean of sins, the nafs is the ocean if desires, death is the ocean of lives, and the grave is the ocean of regrets.

~*~

I swear by Allah! I have never been tested by hardship except that Allah bestowed upon me due to it flour blessings-the first is that I was not tested through sin; the second, that the hardship was not greater than it was; third, I wasn’t deprived of being contented with it; and fourth, I hope that I will be rewarded for it.

I have seen all types of friends but I have never found a friend better than safeguarding the tongue; I have seen all types of clothes but I have never found clothes better than God-consciousness; I have sen all types of wealth but I have never found wealth better than contentment; I have seen all types of good deeds but I have never found a good deed better than giving good advice; and I have seen all types of food but I have never found food more delicious than patience.

When Sayyiduna ‘Umar RadhiAllahu anhu camped on the outskirts of Jerusalem to conquer Bait al-Maqdas, the Christian Crusaders were terrified of his presence and requested a meeting with him before handing over the keys of the city. The Crusaders met him whilst he wore a patched thobe. They asked him the reason as to why his name generated such immense awe and fear that captured the hearts of his enemies. He replied; “Your kings taught you to love the world and its wealth while our Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam taught us to fear Allah Ta’ala and love death.”

Sayyiduna ‘Umar RadhiAllahu anhu during his Caliphate used to check on the wives of the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam and give generously to them. He would not eat any fine food or fruit without sending some of it to the wives of the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam; the last one to whom he would send anything was Hafsah RadhiAllahu anha, and if there was any shortfall, she would be the one whose share was affected. He used to send their stipend to them. This is one of the incidents that took place with the Mother of the Believers Zaynab bint Jahsh RadhiAllahu anha.  After ‘Umar RadhiAllahu anhu had calculated the shares of the Muslims, he sent the Mother of the Believers Zaynab bint Jahsh RadhiAllahu anha her share. When she received it she said, ‘May Allah Ta’ala forgive ‘Umar, my sisters are better able to handle a share like this than me.’ They said, ‘This is all for you.’ She said, ‘SubhanAllah!’ She then hid herself from him from behind a curtain and said, ‘Put it down and cover it with a cloak.’ Then she said to Barzah bint Rafi, ‘Put your hand in and take a handful, and give it to Banu so and so (among her relations and orphans under her care.)’ She shared it out until there was little left under the cloak, then Barzah said, ‘May Allah Ta’ala forgive you, O Mother of the Believers, by Allah we have a right to that.’ She said, ‘You may have whatever is beneath the cloak.’ She lifted up the cloak and found eighty-five dirhams. Then she raised her hands and said, ‘O Allah, do not let me live until the next time ‘Umar distributes shares.’ Then she died. SubhanAllah!

It was narrated from Zayd ibn Aslam that his father said:

‘I went out with ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab RadhiAllahu anhu to the market, and a young woman ran after him saying, ‘O Ameer al-Mu’mimeen, my husband has died and left behind young children. By Allah they cannot take care of themselves and they own nothing, and I am afraid the hyena will eat them. I am the daughter of Khufaf ibn Eema’ al-Ghifari and my father was present at Hudaybiyah with the Messenger of Allah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam’ ‘Umar stood with her and did not move on. He said, ‘Welcome to our close relatives.’ Then he went to a strong camel that was tied near the house and loaded it with two big vessels which he filled with foodstuff, and he placed money and clothing between them. Then he gave the reins to her and said, ‘Take it, for it will not finish until Allah Ta’ala gives you more.’ A man said, ‘O Ameer al-Mu’mineen, you have given her too much.’ ‘Umar said, ‘May your mother be bereft of you! By Allah Ta’ala, I saw the father and brother of this woman besieging a fortress for a long time, then we conquered it, then the next morning we shared out the booty because of their actions.’

Sayyiduna ‘Umar RadhiAllahu anhu on many occasions made this du’a to Allah Ta’ala  “O Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala! Make me such that I may speak with intellect or reap tolerance with silent. O Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala! do not bestow upon me too many favours, so that I may not be confused by them and not too little that I may forget You. Hence, little yet sufficient in comparison to having plenty thereby becoming indulgent and committing sin.”

Regardless of the changes we witness in and around Madinatun Nabi, our hearts can forever be filled with the wise teachings and inspiring accounts of all our predecessors. May lives be lit by ‘the lamp of the people of Jannah’, the definition our Blessed Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam bestowed upon ‘Umar.

O Allah! Favour him with Your good pleasure and raise his degree, bless him, and shower him with the best of Your rewards, Ameen

…moon…valleys…then…now…

…the majestic moon last evening just after Maghrib…a theatrical effect gliding above the architectural splendour of Masjid Nabawi. Floating above our Noble Nabi SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, whose presence glows in hearts brighter than the full moon along with all the qualities bestowed upon him as the Mercy to the Worlds, SubhanAllah!

But this post is not so much about the moon, but about Madian valleys.

Bathan Valley flowed to the west of Masjid Nabawi all those centuries ago, and still lies beneath all that has been constructed upon it ever since. However the imagination tries to conjure what the scene may have been like each year when the 12th of Rabial Thani moon hovered over these blessed valleys during the decade of our Beloved Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasalla’s time in Madinah. Meandering through date palms, by mud houses, grazing flocks, sauntering camels, flitting singing birds, as water rippled after rains of mercy. Or as a dry sandy track where creatures scuttled, children played, wood was gathered, crops tendered, all to the ceaseless melodious sound of the Qur’an filling the skies and hearts.

This is the valley that is referred to by our Blessed Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam in various Ahadith.

From Sahih Bukhari it is narrated by ‘Aishah RadhiAllahu anha:
When Allah’s Apostle SallAllahu alaihi wasallam reached Medina, Abu Bakr and Bilal RadhiAllahu anhuma became ill. When Abu Bakr’s fever got worse, he would recite this poetic verse: “Everybody is staying alive with his people, yet death is nearer to him than His shoe laces.” And Bilal, when his fever deserted him, would recite: “Would that I could stay overnight in a valley wherein I would be surrounded by Idhkhir and Jalil (sweet smelling herbs). Would that one day I could drink the water of the Majanna, and would that the two mountains Shama and Tafil would appear to me!” The Prophet said, “O Allah! Curse Shaiba bin Rabi’a and ‘Utba bin Rabi’a and Umaiya bin Khalaf as they turned us out of our land to the land of epidemics.” Allah’s Apostle then said, “O Allah! Make us love Medina as we love Mecca or even more than that. O Allah! Give blessings in our Sa and our Mudd (measures for weighing foodstuffs) and make the climate of Medina suitable for us, and divert its fever towards Aljuhfa.” Aisha added: When we reached Medina, it was the most unhealthy of Allah’s lands, and the valley of Bathan used to flow with impure colored water.

And the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam is reported to have said: “Which of you would like to go early in the morning every day to Bathan or Al-‘Aqiq and return from it with two large-humped she-camels, without committing a sin or severing the ties of kinship?” They replied, “O Messenger of Allah! We (all) would like that!” He said, “If one of you goes early in the morning to the Masjid and learns or reads two Ayahs from the Book of Allah, the Exalted and the Glorious, is better for him than having two camels, and three Ayahs are better for him than three large camels, and four Ayahs are better for him than four large camels, and so on with the number of them and camels.” Such is the virtues of learning and reciting the Qur’an.

From Abu Dawud Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammas RadhiAllahu anhu narrated: The Apostle of Allah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam entered upon Thabit ibn Qays RadhiAllahu anhu. The version of Ahmad (ibn Salih) states: When he was ill the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said: Remove the harm, O Lord of men, from Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammas. He then took some dust of Bathan, and put it in a bowel, and then mixed it with water and blew in it, and poured it on him.

Narrated Bakr ibn Mubashshir al-Ansari RadhiAllahu anhu: I used to go to the place of prayer on the day of the breaking of the fast, and on the day of sacrifice along with the Companions of the Apostle of Allah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. We would walk through the valley known as Bathan till we came to the place of prayer. Then we would pray along with the Apostle of Allah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam and return through Bathan to our house.

To retain some detail I have posted the map in two sections, from south, the bottom map to north. Bathan valley is the one on the right etching north-west by Masjid Nabawi before continuing northward where Wadi Quna joins it at the foot of Jabal Uhud. Wadi Ranono is the middle one that meets Bathan in the Awali district, while the far left one is Wadi Aqeeq. All congregate to the west of Jabal Uhud in the area known as Al-Jurf.

Al-Jurf (scroll down for previous significant information) was where the young Usamah ibn Zaid RadhiAllahu anhu was dispatched with his army, temporarily camping there during the final days of Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam’s illness. The Sahaba RadhiAllahu anhum in the expedition often travelled the 3 miles into Madinah with the permission of Usamah RadhiAllahu anhu to be at the bedside of Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. Controversy surrounded not only the appointment of Usamah RadhiAllahu anhu, but also the timing of this army to wage an attack to the north, but the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam explicitly sated that the army should not be stopped on any account and ordered them to set out for their destination as planned. The Roman Emperor Harqal received the news of the death of the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam as well as the presence of the army on the borders of Syria, ready to attack. He was amazed and overawed that  regardless of the loss these valiant Sahabah RadhiAllahu anhum were experiencing, their valour and dedication did not deter them. This daring attitude scared the enemy and the morale of the Emperor, and Allah Ta’ala gave the Muslims victory without a single loss, SubhanAllah!

Other incidents regarding tayammum have been related to the Al-Jurf area. Ibn ‘Umar RadhiAllahu anhu was coming from his land in Al-Jurf and the time for ‘Asr came when he reached Marbad an-Na’am, a place where camels are kept. He prayed after performing tayammum and then entered Madinah while the sun was still high, but did not repeat the prayer.
Also, ‘Umayr, the mawla of Ibn ‘Abbas RadhiAllahu anhuma, was heard to say, “‘Abdullah ibn Yasar, the mawla of Maymuna RadhiAllahu anha, the wife of the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam and I went to visit Abu Juhaym ibn al-Harith ibn Simma al-Ansari RadhiAllahu anhu. Abu Juhaym said, ‘Once the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was coming from the direction of Bi’r Jamal, Al-Jurf. A man met him and greeted him but the Prophet, SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, did not reply to him until he came to a wall. He wiped his face and hands and then returned his greeting.’”

Magnificent reminders abound throughout this Luminous City, radiating the glory and grandeur of our Blessed Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam and his teachings, his Sunnah.

All good is from Allah Ta’ala whereas mistakes are from this humble speck. May Allah Ta’ala Bless all readers, bringing you all closer to Him and His Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam.  May He accept our humble efforts and grant us the capacity to be good and do good. Ameen.

…He suffices me…

HE SUFFICES ME

Allah is sufficient for us and most excellent is the Protector (3:173)

Allah is sufficient for me; on Him do the reliant rely. (39:38)

Allah is sufficient for me, there is no god but He; on Him do I rely, and He is the Lord of mighty power. (9:129)

Whoever trusts in Allah, He suffices for him. (65:3)

Go and contemplate God’s Wonders, become lost to yourselves from the majesty and awe of God. When the one who beholds the Wonders of God abandons pride and egotism from contemplating God’s work, that one will know his proper station and will be silent concerning the Maker. Such a person will only say from their soul, “I cannot praise You properly,” because that declaration is beyond reckoning.

With God there is no room for two egos. You say “I”, and He says “I.” In order for this duality to disappear, either you must die for Him or He for you. It is not possible, however, for Him to die, either phenomenally or conceptually, because “He is the Ever-living who dieth not.” He is so gracious, however, that if it were possible He would die for you in order that the duality might disappear. Since it is not possible for Him to die, you must die so that He may be manifested to you, thus eliminating the duality.

Your Bread is Seeking You

Listen, put your trust in God,

don’t let your hands and feet tremble with fear:

your daily bread is more in love with you, than you with it.

It is in love with you and is holding back

only because it knows of your lack of self-denial.

If you had any self-denial, the daily bread

would throw itself upon you as lovers do.

What is this feverish trembling for fear of hunger?

With trust in God one can live full-fed.

Be Love’s Willing Slave

Come and be Love’s willing slave,

Forsake the slavery of this world

and take up Love’s sweet service.

The free, the world enslaves,

but to slaves Love grants freedom.

I crave release from this world

like a bird from its egg;

free me from this shell that clings.

As from the grave, grant me new life.

O Love, O Quail in the free folds of spring,

wildly sing songs of joy.

Emptiness

Does anyone write something on a plate

that has already been written over,

or plant a sapling where one already grows?

No; he seeks a blank piece of paper

and sows the seed where none has yet been sown.

Sister, be bare earth;

be a clean piece of paper untouched by writing,

that you may be ennobled by the pen of revelation,*

so that the Gracious One may sow seed within you.

* By the pen! By all they write! (68:1)

…everything changes rapidly in Madinatun Nabi, the light, the pilgrims, the wind, the dust, the prayer, the living…the last two photos taken with the camera phone today…day serenely changing to night…the previous ones over the past few days while on the run!

…Insha’Allah as a few more days and nights alternate and Allah Ta’ala calls more of His slaves back to Him, this speck’s current commitments will lessen, with more regular posts resuming…

Ya Rabb, in these final moments of another blessed month of Rabi’al Awwal you have graced us with, may our salutations increase with each unfolding day:

O Allah, bless the soul of our master Muhammad among the souls, and bless his body among the bodies, and his grave among the graves and his family and companions, and grant them peace.

O Allah, bless our master Muhammad whenever those who do dhikr mention him.

O Allah, bless our master Muhammad whenever those who neglect his dhikr neglect it.

O Allah, bless our master Muhammad, the Unlettered Prophet and his wives, the mothers of the believers, and his offspring and the People of his House with a blessing and peace whose quantity is not counted and whose help is not cut off.

O Allah, bless our master Muhammad in quantities great as what Your knowledge encompasses and Your Book contains with a blessing which is Yours as a pleasure and his as payment, and give him the means of mediation and virtue and high degree, and raise him up, O Allah, to the praiseworthy station which You promised him and reward him from us what he deserves, and bless all his brothers, the Prophets and truthful ones, martyrs and righteous.

O Allah, bless our master Muhammad and put him in the closest position on the Day of Rising.

O Allah, bless our master Muhammad SallAllahu alaihi wasallam.
