Join in the variety of sights from the walk from Masjid Juma’ah to Masjid Nabawi this afternoon…

All good is from Allah Ta’ala whereas mistakes are from this humble speck. May Allah Ta’ala Bless all readers, bringing you all closer to Him and His Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam.  May He accept our humble efforts and grant us the capacity to be good and do good. Ameen.

tiggy

Tiggy…the Australian slang for the kids game of tag, or chasey was the other name we called this frenetic running and squealing pursuit to catch each other. An energetic romp that seemed to dispense with the wriggly energy needing to erupt after sitting at rigid wooden desks, hearing the scratch of chalk on the blackboard while inhaling its fine dust. Blog tags seem to lack fizz in comparison :) so I have given myself the liberty to ramble a bit with this game of tiggy.

All three primary schools I went to were sturdy red brick buildings. On finding these two photos from a google search, of the first and the last primary school I attended, it seems not much has changed in so many decades. Early school memories still occupy a vibrant space of happiness and joy within my saved files. I could never comprehend why so many cried when left at the door. Each day meant adventure and discovery, beginning with negotiating the huge step up for a tiny not-yet five year old on the green rattling tram, with the exhilarating wind tossing wispy curls as we journeyed along a road lined with more red brick architecture.

This was the year of learning the rules of tiggy, marbles, cherry bobs, swap cards, skippy, Mr Wolf, star jumps and stealing! A vivid chapter indeed! It was towards the end of the year when a Christmas tree was set up in the classroom with the request for children to bring gifts to hang on it for the ‘poor’. It seems I was not content with what I had been given to contribute so I ‘innocently’ took a piece of red paper money from my mothers purse. It was a huge amount at the time, and all I knew was that it was ‘big’ money, not the small change given to put in our money box.

I went to a shop near school and brought two small dolls in a the cutest of little baskets. One doll was black, the other white. I loved this so much, that I also got one for myself as well as one for the Christmas tree, and hid the change under a crystal cabinet at home. I had no idea of the value of what I had spent or what was remaining. But I was soon to realize the pain associated with this foray into robbing for the sake of the poor and pandering to my own whims! My father’s fascinating and deft actions with his shaving strap suddenly revealed a totally different function!

I spent the most time in this school. A beautiful historic building with the best of secret corners to hide when playing tiggy. And the peppercorn trees! We had our own enchanted forest beckoning at the sound of every bell from that bell tower. On the corner where the yellow sign is was a tiny shop where students in the final 6th grade were given permission to go on Friday at lunch time, where for a penny a huge hunk of honeycomb became the weekly treat. Some of the other favourites were eucalyptus diamonds, black aniseed balls, licorice straps and black jelly beans! Heaven!

Anyway enough digressing…I have been tagged by sketchedsoul :)

1. Do you think you are hot?

I DO NOT THINK BUT I KNOW I AM HOT….I am in this blessed City of Light and Radiance where the summer temperatures average in the mid 40’s every day for at least another four months! It is now 32 degrees sitting at the computer with the AC on! I am hot! Alhumdulillah!

2. Upload your favourite picture of you. (couldn’t decide)

3. Why do you like that (these) picture(s)?

I have broken the rules as I have inserted three pictures! Blog tags not to be taken very seriously!

Pictures of myself became scarce after Islam, although some family members could easily blackmail me with ones they have hidden away!

The first one is self as a baby with a recent one of my mother. This baby one has always fascinated me because of that shaft of light hitting the chest, and to think that Allah Ta’ala had plans beyond the wildest imaginings from that chubby innocence to His embrace much later on in my life, Subhanallah!

The second one was taken by a friend the other evening. It is symbolic of calm to me and confirms the blessing of a physical closeness to our blessed Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam with his name glowing from the door, and Insha’Allah in the heart.

And the third one, taken for non-Muslim family, for them to see I am still capable of some crazy antics, and will always love them regardless of their beliefs.

4. When was the last time you ate pizza?

So long ago that I cannot remember, but now that I see the word I am craving for one!

5. The last song you listened to?

Mesut Kurtis Illahi

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUhYPiFBPdk&feature=related

6. What are you doing right now besides this? Preparing dates for baking a date cake.

7. What name would you prefer besides yours?

Insha’Allah the one I was given helps to shed ‘light’ on the Path, so Alhumdulillah I do not prefer any other.

8. People To Tag:
i. Br Naeem

ii. Online Rihla

iii. Healing Hearts.

iv. Tranquilart

v.  Southern Muslimah

9. Who is number one?

A brother who seems to have a fun sense of humour in dispersed with a serious side, plus he is almost a neighbour in this desert kingdom!

10. Number three is having a relationship with?

She strives diligently in cementing the only relationships worth having in this Dunya :) …with Allah Ta’ala and His Habib SallAllahu alaihi wasallam.

11. Say something about number five?

A constant variety of subjects shared in a racy, humane and captivating style!

12. How about number four?

Someone who has been hiding her talents from us for too long. May she respond to this game of tiggy and share some of her wisdom!

13. Who is number two?

Umm Squeakster…the loving carer of a rescue cat along with other facets on Islam and life as a Muslimah in the US.

From the Chapter on the description of the joking of Sayyidina Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam:
It has been proven that Sayyidina Rasoolullah sallallahu alaihe wasallam joked. It has also been prohibited to joke. In Tirmizi a narration of Sayyidina Ibn Abbas radiyallahu anhu is reported wherein it has been prohibited to joke. Imaam Nawawi has compared the two in this manner and said that excessive joking which will result in the heart becoming hard, will keep one away from the remembrance of Allah, may become a means of troubling a Muslim or that which may lessen the dignity and degrade one. All these are included in the prohibition. If it (joking) is void of this and is done solely to appease or make someone happy, then it will be mustahab. Sayyidina Abdullah ibn Haarith radiyallahu anhu says, “I have not seen anyone who makes a person more cheerful than Rasoolullah sallallahu alaihe wasallam.” The reason being that the cheerful nature of Sayyidina Rasoolullah sallallahu alaihe wasallam was more of a source of happiness than sadness.
There was also a special necessity for Sayyidina Rasoolullah sallallahu alaihe wasallam to joke. That is due to the personal dignity and greatness of Sayyidina Rasoolullah sallallahu alaihe wasallam which was of such high calibre, that even at a distance of a months journey his awe was felt. For this reason, if Sayyidina Rasoolullah sallallahu alaihe wasallam did not smile and joke, it would have been impossible due to the awe, for people to come near him and the doors of reaping benefit would have been closed.  It would have become a habit until the day of Qiyaamah of those who strive to follow and emulate every deed and habit of Sayyidina Rasoolullah sallallahu alaihe wasallam purposely not to smile and joke.  It would also have become difficult for those close to a Sheikh (spiritual teacher), to come close and benefit from him.  May Allah shower countless Durood and blessings on the pure soul who opened the doors of easiness for the Ummah.  Someone told Sayyidina Sufyan ibn Uyaynah radiyallahu anhu, who was a great Muhaddith, “Joking is also a calamity.”
He replied, “It is a sunnah, and only for those who know its bounds and also know how to joke in the proper manner.”

Ameen.

‘in-still’

Extol, then, God’s limitless glory when you enter upon the evening hours, and when you rise at morn; and seeing that unto Him is due all praise in the heavens and earth, glorify Him in the afternoon as well, and when you enter upon the hour of noon. (30:17-18)

The Messenger of Allah, Prophet Muhammad SallAllahu alaihi wasallam has said: The persons who secludes himself in the Masjid in I’tikaf in true faith and hope for the reward of Allah, all of his previous sins shall be forgiven.

Our Lord Subhanahu Wa Ta’aladescends each night to the earth’s sky when there remains the final third of the night, and He says: “Who is saying a prayer to Me that I may answer it? Who is asking something of Me that I may give it him? Who is asking forgiveness of Me that I may forgive him?”

The Apostle of Allah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam was asked: Which of the actions is best? He replied: Observing prayer early in its period.

In a Hadith Qudsi, the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said: Out of all the ways through which My servant gets closer to Me Salah is the dearest to Me.

Jabir RadhiAllahu anhu narrates: I heard Nabi SallAllahu alaihi wasallam saying: Verily when Shaytan hears Adhan he flees until he reaches the place Rauha. Sulaiman RahimahuLlah said: I asked Jabir about Rauha. He replied that it is thirty-six miles from Madinah.

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar RadhiAllahu anhuma narrates that Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said: Three persons will b e upon mounds of Musk on the Day of Resurrection, envied by all former and all latter people. The man who calls Adhan for the five times Salat during the day and the night; and the man who leads Salat in a manner that people are pleased with him; and a slave who has fulfilled the rights of Allah and the rights of his master.

Salman RadhiAllahu anhu narrates that Nabi SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said: He who performs Wudu in his house and perfroms it well, then comes to the Masjid, he is the guest of Allah, and it is obligatory upon the Host to extend hospitality to His guest.

Abu Hurairah RadhiAllahu anhu narrates that Nabi SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said: Verily Allah will illuminate those who make their way to the Masjids in darkness with a brilliant light on the Day of Resurrection.

Abu Hurairah RadhiAllahu anhu narrates that Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said: Those who frequent the Masjids in darkness undoubtebly are the people who are immersed in Allah’s Mercy.

Abu Hurairah RadhiAllahu anhu narrates that Nabi SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said: Anyone of you who leaves his home to come to my Masjid, for every footstep a virtue is written, and for every other footstep a sin is erased until he returns.

sweet basil and..

….then happiness and inner fulfillment and a garden of bliss. (56:89)

…husked grain and scented herb. (55:12)

Allah Ta’ala in His Divine Speech uses the word ‘raihan’ in the above two verses. Various translations are to be found interpreting this word, but generally it means fragrant plant, scented herb and refers to the sweet basil plant.

Abu Uthman an-Nahdi RadhiAllahu anhu narrates that Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, “When one of you is given basil he must not reject it, for it has come forth from Paradise.” Al-Tirmidhi.

The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam also referred to his beloved grandsons, Hasan and Husain as his two sweet basils in this world. SubhanAllah!

While another Hadith mentions Raihan with reference to how one recites the Qur’an Majeed: Narrated Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari RadhiAllahu anhu, the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, “The example of a believer who recites the Qur’an is like that of a citron which tastes good and smells good. And a believer who does not recite the Qur’an is like a date which is good in taste but has no smell. And the example of a hypocrite who recites the Qur’an is like the raihana (sweet basil) which smells good but tastes bitter. And the example of a hypocrite who does not recite the Qur’an is like a wild gourd which tastes bitter and has no smell.”

This Raihan flower

is what was placed in my lap as I sat in the breezy courtyard of Masjid Nabawi. The Mubarak air is already heavily perfumed, so when wafts of the pungent sweetness of this plant is added to the sensation one’s intoxication reaches realms of sheer bliss!

Medicinally, sweet Basil (O. basilicum) is stimulant, styptic, demulcent and carminative. The juice of the leaves when snuffed causes sneezing and clears the brain. It is a remedy for mild nervous or hysterical disorders. Also, helps in stomach ache and skin diseases.

Sweet Basil, also known as myrtle, holds a special place in the Hadith of the Prophet (SAW) too, and has a long healing tradition. Ibn Abbas narrates that, “When the Prophet Nuh (AS) disembarked from the ark, the first plant that he planted was myrtle.” He also narrated that, according to a Hadith related by Abu Nu’aim, “Adam departed from the garden with three things: myrtle, which is the queen of all sweet smelling shrubs in the world; compressed dates, which are queen of all the dates in the world; and stalk of corn, which is queen of all the food in the world.”

Most likely, basil is referred to as a queen because it combats many of man’s ailments. It is a warming herb, thus working on all problems related to circulation. It also contains estragol, lineol and camphor, which act as lung and stomach tonics. Camphor is a powerful pain reliever so basil is often used for headaches, insect bites and other painful ailments. Since it can stimulate the adrenal cortex, it is often used in anti-depressant formulas.

Basil also contains antibacterial compounds, which make it useful for a variety of ailments such as colds, flu and stomach problems. When combined with cloves, it has been found to leech the body of heavy metal pollutants – probably one reason it is considered among the superior detoxifying and tonic herbs.

The ecstasy that hits the heart as one inhales this heavenly aroma also reflects what many aromatherapists say about its properties:

Basil oil is a very beneficial oil and can be helpful not only for headaches and migraines, but also has an uplifting effect on depression.

and,

In modern aromatherapy, basil is used to cheer the heart and mind. The
sweet, energizing aroma seems to help relieve sorrow and melancholy.

and,

Basil essential oil is also used as a digestive tonic. Since basil oil has carminative properties, it is used for treating indigestion, constipation, stomach cramps and flatulence. It provides immediate relief from the gas in your stomach and intestines. It is also colic and hence is used for bowel pain.

Further searches will reveal so much more about this blessed plant, but its superiority is that is has come forth from Paradise, SubhanAllah!!

Sisters frequently arrive for Salat clutching bunches of Raihan. Some distribute to those nearby, others place it near to where they will do Sujud, while others may have some pinned to their attire. Its presence saturates the air, with hundreds enjoying the fragrance for hours, SubhanAllah!

And basil adorns not only the heads of the living, especially the flower men in the south of the Kingdom, but also the biers of the dead.

Allah Ta’ala’s bounties are countless, unlimited, and our knowledge is minuscule! He Subhanahu wa Ta’ala gifts us with banquets for the soul as seen in the beauty of His Majesty in the flora adorning our lives. After many years of living in this City of Light I only recently discovered places where fresh flowers are for sale. I now regularly wander to these outlets to buy a single flower, which I have been enjoying photographing:

double swap

Dear Sister Farhana of sketchedsoul is forever dreaming up ‘swaps’ between sisters across the globe, as well as inspiring activities and projects to assist those in need. Visit her space to see the workings of a creative and caring soul.

I have participated in some of her enticing suggestions resulting in much delight from the idea of reaching out and sharing, making and giving to some one I do not know. I see these ‘swaps’ as yet another opportunity to check one’s intention, and I thank sketchedsoul for that! Our love for others for the sake of Allah Ta’ala is part of the strongest handholds of Iman, while the desire to be with the ones we love, both near and far, known and unknown, Insha’Allah will be the means to be with them on the Day of Rising. Such a joyous thought; to be with loved ones on that fateful Day!

The last ‘swap’ was a double one! Click image for details.

I received from Yaney in Singapore this rollicking tale of magic, taking me back decades to childhood memories of fantasy and adventure.

The task then was to create something that could be posted back to her that represented my reactions to the book! The imagination was challenged! Eventually the idea of a mobile, symbolic of fantasy, wishing and enchantment, was decided upon. Then came the searching for appropriate materials to execute this, which was not so difficult as there are many shops hidden away in the back alleys nearby specializing in all that glitters and shines catering to the decorative tastes of the locals.

This was the mobile, rather tangled, in the box just before posting it to Singapore. The mail system here demands that the officials in the post office sight whatever is being sent. This caused a few curious glances!

This is Yaney’s photo of it untangled and suspended in her home.

I sent Yaney the above book, a treasure chest of positive affirmations and was thrilled to receive the following as her creative response to the contents.

A Japaenes paper lantern, throwing a golden glow all around, Masha’Allah. And as Yaney wrote: ‘…the lantern is representative of the book being a light guiding us towards His One True Path.’ SubhanAllah!

But what I love the most about this cherished gift are the quotes from the book Yaney has written around the lantern. Touching reminders for all time that become illuminated when the ‘light is on’.

Do not be content to have some dark areas in your life, for the light is there; all you have to do is to turn it on and see it shining.

Be like the bee which lands on fragrant flowers and fresh branches.

The fire of envy consumes the body, and excessive jealousy is like a raging fire.

Wherever you go and find darkness in your life; what you have to do is to light the lamp within yourself.

Yesterday is a dream that has gone and tomorrow is merely a beautiful hope. Only today is real.

Learn patience from Asiyah, loyalty from Khadijah, sincerity from Aishah and steadfastness from Fatimah RadhiAllahu anhunna.

Also in the gift was a cute little memo pad and some sticky flags. JazakiLlahu khairan Yaney! May blessings shower you and yours and may we strive to be happy women on the path to Allah Ta’ala and meet if not in this Dunya, then in the best of magical Gardens, sitting on the best of wishing chairs, where every desire is met, Ameen.

And appreciative smiles to Sister Farhana, who I will be returning to very soon, as she has TAGGED me!!!!!!!

And, Alhumdulillah some young Saudi girls are now being exposed to the magic of Enid Blyton’s adventures.

Quba Street

Quba Street, comprised of two narrow divided streets, approximately 3kms long,  connects Masjid Nabawi with Masjid Quba. Many say this is the path taken by our Beloved Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam and his Sahabah RadiAllahu anhum when they frequented Masjid Quba, and Allah the Almighty knows best.

Allah Ta’ala refers to the virtue of Masjid Quba in Surah Taubah, Ayat 108:

….certainly a Masjid founded on piety from the very first day is deserving that you should stand in it…(9:108)

And certainly thousands daily attend Salat and make Ziyarah throughout the year, acknowledging it was the first Masjid ever constructed in the history of Islam as well as reaping the benefit of the reward of an Umrah being recorded for those who perform two Rak’ats there, as according to the Hadith.

Two of the four minarets of Masjid Quba are seen in the distance, with the typical constant stream of bumper to bumper traffic, which is not so much connected to attendance at either Masjid Nabawi, the direction this flow is heading, or to Masjid Quba, but because these two streets seem to be a shoppers paradise with a focus on wedding themes and all that entails.

From the drabness of the surrounding older style buildings bright bold colours capture the gaze…

…sequined beading, lavish embroidery and shop upon shop of sparkling metallic shoes covering every spectrum of the rainbow magnetize abaya clad groups of women. Most of the chaotic congestion is caused by them being dropped off and collected hours later, laden with bulky shopping bags.

For months the footpath on the left, leading to Masjid Quba has been widened and paved with patterned plum-toned bricks. I am not sure if this is the official pathway the government stated it was constructing based on the route the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam used to take from Masjid Nabawi with Masjid Quba.

The minaret in this view from a neighbours rooftop is of Masjid Tariq Bin Laden, the Ottoman masjid in the previous post, and just beyond this is Masjid Juma’ah, then Masjid Quba…

….while looking to the north is Masjid Nabawi and Jabal Uhud…

…with the minaret of Masjid Bilal just visible in central distance…the following photos zooming in…

…Masjid Bilal minaret with Jabal Uhud in the background…Insha’Allah the views from this rooftop convey the sense of distance between Masjid Nabawi and Masjid Quba…

…and provide a glimpse of the housing of the Madanians blessed to be mid way between these two blessed places…I ponder on the following as my eyes and heart witness current conditions…

Narrated by ‘Abdullah bin Dinar RadhiAllahu anhu: Ibn ‘Umar RadhiAllahu anhusaid, “The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam used to go to the masjid of Quba every Saturday (sometimes) walking and (sometimes) riding.” ‘Abdullah Ibn ‘Umar used to do the same.

Narrated by Ibn ‘Umar RadhiAllahu anhu: The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam used to go to the Masjid of Quba (sometimes) walking and sometimes riding. Added Nafi (in another narration), “He then would offer two Rak’at (in the Masjid of Quba).”

In front of Masjid Quba, is a sweet-water well that is now closed. The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam’s ring which he wore which was then kept by Abu Bakr RadhiAllahu anhu, then by ‘Umar RadhiAllahu anhu and and lastly by ‘Uthman RadhiAllahu anhu fell into this well hence the name Bi’ru al-Khatam, the Ring Well. Sayyidina ‘Uthmaan RadhiAllahu anhu ordered a thorough search of the well. For two days water of the well was drained out, but it could not be found.

It is also called Bi’ru Tufla because at first its water was salty but when the Holy Prophet Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam put his mubarak saliva into it, it changed to sweet refreshing water.

Dust, pigeons, palm trees and various hardships still remain the same in this very space as the glorious time of our Noble Nabi SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, SubhanAllah.

Madina’s historian, ibn Shabba, wrote that ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab RadhiAllahu anhu, came to Quba in the afternoon, entered the Masjid, asked for a green palm branch, and used it to dust the Qibla wall clean, and then said addressing the Masjid, “By Allah! Had I been in a remote region, I would have undertaken a camel journey to visit you!”

Similar accounts were given by Bukhari in his Tarikh, ibn Sa’d and ‘Abdal Razzaq. Ibn Shabba also wrote that Anas ibn Malik RadhiAllahu anhu, who used to be the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam’s servant as a boy, once came to Masjid Quba, prayed two Rak’ats then sat down. The people of the village sat around him. He said, “Transcendent is Allah! How great is the merit of this Masjid! Had I been a months journey away it would have been worth the journey! He who leaves his house, heading for it, and prays four Rak’ats there, Allah Ta’ala sends him back with the reward of an Umrah.”

When the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam first built Masjid Quba the Qibla was towards Jerusalem, then upon the Divine order of Allah Ta’ala it was changed to face Makkah. On both occasions, our Beloved Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam was intructed by Jibreel Alaihis Salam on the direction of the Qibla, SubhanAllah!
