the sound of soaring

you can hear it

listen

the roaring pulse rushing through veins

throbbing molecules crashing bouncing

not one created particle not rejoicing in the sound of soaring

ever since the Ruby Pen glided over the Pearl Tablet

the humming in the Heavens echoed

anticipating the sound of soaring

the sound of expectation in fluttering feathered wings

preparing the lightning mount

adjusting reins stirrups bridle

to fly through inky liquid

bursting constellations smashing celestial orbs

listen

now

to the sound of soaring

as did pebbles under the palm frond mat

a whispered rustling as the Sent One SallAllahu alaihi wasallam’s slumber was aroused

Zamzam swishing in a golden bowl

caressing his heart

far off oceans rumbled mountains heaved animals and insects alert

listening

to the sound of soaring

the air lit up as travellers whirled from the House

over the sacred sanctuary that would offer refuge

to the Prophetic Gathering

the sound of soaring within the folds of ancient cloaks

shoulder to shoulder

murmuring praises as the Praised One, the Worthy of Praise, the Most often Praised the Prophet and Messenger of Light

led the prayer

listen

now

to the sound of soaring

intensifying as the ascent cracks the stillness

of the Seven Heavens opening

deafening the wali

inaudible to those too stubborn to listen

be attentive

hear the sound of soaring as the Farthest Limit draws near for Al Mustafa

a bows length

milk wine honey rushing gushing

harken to the music of leaves turning from sapphire to chrysolite

and golden moths flutter over the Salsabil

eavesdrop on the sublime exchange

let the pounding sound of Iman soar

as the gift of prayer wrapped in love embossed with mercy

is bequeathed

to us all

take heed

be attentive

relentless in

seeking the sound of soaring

from small bubbling beginnings

to the intensity of explosive acoustics

inside

deep inside

revived by reflecting pondering contemplating

the greatest Ascent

listen deep within

let the sound of soaring transport you to dizzying heights

speed along the sound waves of soaring

now!

Sayyid Abu Bakr ibn Ali Ibrahim al-Bayti asked Imam al-Haddad about the saying of Shaykh Yahya ibn Mu’ath al-Razi:  “Abandon all the world and you will find all the world. To take it is to abandon it and to abandon it is to take it.”

He answered: The words are clear and show not the least obscurity. They mean that whoever abandons the whole world in renunciation, God will compensate him with repose both in his heart due to giving up avidity and preoccupation, and in his body due to giving up striving and seeking. Reasonable men only wish for repose in the world, for this do people strive and aspire outwardly and inwardly, but they miss the way to it which is only found by the renunciates. This is indicated by the saying of the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam: “Renouncing the world rests the heart and body, while the wish for it increases worry and sadness.” A sage was once asked: “To whom does the world belong?” He said: “To those who abandon it.” And: “To whom does the hereafter belong?” He said: “To those who pursue it.”

…sonance…

…The sound system in Masjid al Haram Makkah is the biggest and the most robust sound system on planet earth. Nothing comes close to it at all. The second biggest being the one of Masjid Nabawi…this is the Imam’s Mihrab in Masjid Nabawi…

[detail of where microphones are placed for Ruku and Sajdah]

…SubhanAllah! The technology Allah Ta’ala has blessed the Ummah with so that Adhan and Salat can be heard by millions…not only those present in the Haramain, but for every Adhan and every Salat performed in both of our sacred mosques recordings are available for a billion plus across the entire planet, as well as live televised streams…SubhanAllah! Such is Allah Ta’ala’s mercy and generosity to His creation…

…the entire population of Madinah al Munawwarah would cry when they heard Bilal RadhiAllahu anhu call Adhan…who cries upon hearing this Mubarak call now?? Allah Ta’ala’s mercy is unlimited…it’s our hearts that need fine tuning, Insha’Allah…

…Adhan moves across the globe in never ending waves…rippling hearts from high mountain tops to the deepest of valleys, from elaborate mosques to humble shacks, from desert dwellings to bustling cities, from sophisticated sound systems to crackly recordings…

nevertheless…

…how wondrous it would have been…

…to hear Ibn Umar RadhiAllahu anhu narrate the following from our Noble Nabi SallAllahu alaihi wasallam:
“When the Muslims arrived at Medina, they used to assemble for the prayer, and used to guess the time for it. During those days, the practice of Adhan for the prayers had not been introduced yet. Once they discussed this problem regarding the call for prayer. Some people suggested the use of a bell like the Christians, others proposed a trumpet like the horn used by the Jews, but ‘Umar RadhiAllahu anhu was the first to suggest that a man should call the people for the prayer; so Allah’s Apostle ordered Bilal RadhiAllahu anhu to get up and pronounce the Adhan for prayers.”

[photo from the Mukabbarya platform, located where Bilal RadhiAllahu anhu would call Adhan for Juma'ah. Looking down onto Rowdha Shareef ]

…or to have heard Abu Hurairah RadhiAllahu anhu’s voice as he narrated what he had heard our Blessed Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam say:

“When the Adhan is pronounced Satan takes to his heels and passes wind with noise during his flight in order not to hear the Adhan. When the Adhan is completed he comes back and again takes to his heels when the Iqama is pronounced and after its completion he returns again till he whispers into the heart of the person (to
divert his attention from his prayer) and makes him remember things which he does not recall to his mind before the prayer and that causes him to forget how much he has prayed.”

…or…”Any person who takes a bath on Friday like the bath of Janaba and then goes for the prayer in the first hour, it is as if he had sacrificed a camel in Allah’s cause; and whoever goes in the second hour it is as if he had sacrificed a cow; and whoever goes in the third hour, then it is as if he had sacrificed a horned ram; and if one goes in the fourth hour, then it is as if he had sacrificed a hen; and whoever goes in the fifth hour then it is as if he had offered an egg. When the Imam comes out to begin the Khutba, the angels present themselves to listen to the Khutba.”

…or to have heard the voice of Salman al Farisi RadhiAllahu anhu narrate that he heard our Beloved Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam say:

“Whoever takes a bath on Friday, purifies himself as much as he can, then uses hair oil or perfumes himself with the scent of his house, then proceeds for the Jumua prayer and does not separate two persons sitting together in the mosque, then prays as much as Allah has written for him and then remains silent while the Imam is delivering the Khutba, his sins in-between the present and the last Friday would be forgiven.”

…but surely a most awesome sound would be to hear our Beloved Al Mustafa SallAllahu alaihi wasallam saying:

“The person who recites Surah Kahf on Fridays, a Nur will appear for him from below the Arsh as high as the skies. This light will help him in the darkness of the day of resurrection . And all the sins which he may have committed from the last Friday till this Friday will be forgiven.”
…and…”Of all the days, Friday is the most virtuous. It is on this day that the trumpet will be blown. Send abundant salawaat upon me on Fridays because they are presented to me on that day.” The Sahabah  RadiAllahu anhum asked: “O Rasulullah! How will they be presented to you when even your bones will not be present after your death?” Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam replied: “Allah Ta’ala has made the earth haraam upon the prophets forever.”

JUMA’AH MUBARAK!

…JazakumuLLahu khaira to Brother NK for sharing the sound system link, click for technical details and more photos…

All good is from Allah Ta’ala whereas mistakes are from this humble speck. May Allah Ta’ala Bless all readers, bringing you all closer to Him and His Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam.  May He accept our humble efforts and grant us the capacity to be good and do good. Ameen.

Light Upon Light

The City of Light is glowing with an extra effulgence of light. The Blessed Resident of the Dome of Peace is the perpetual Light upon Light, but an extra light shines that appears to become more luminous as each day of fasting passes with, Insha’Allah, the inner purification polishing, cleansing and radiating a sparkle. And as each day vanishes, leaving us only with our Amal, the awe, magnitude and the Brilliant Light of the Night of Power approaches.

All forms of worship have increased and the Shayateen chained, illuminating hearts with a greater sense of the sweetness of obedience, devotion and passion for the Deen. SubhanAllah, light upon light upon light!

The faithful in the thousands recite the Qur’an Majeed, honouring this month that Allah Ta’ala gifted man with His Divine Words sent with Jibreel Alaihis Salam from the heavens and the Preserved Tablets to our Beloved Rasululullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, and multiplying the layers of luminance. SubhanAllah, light upon light upon light!

On the eve of the 17th day Sheikh Salaah Al-Budair was reciting Surat An-Nur. Insha’Allah click on the link, scroll to the last ten Surahs and wait for the 13th Rak’at for the emotionally charged recitation of the verses of LIGHT. One wonders if a contemporary Sheikh can send shivers along the spinenad electrify the soul now, how must it have been to hear our Beloved Nabi SallAllahu alaihi wasallam and Jibreel Alaihis Salam recite? Ya Rabb! SubhanAllah, light upon light upon light!

Allah is the Light of the Heavens and of the earth. His Light is like this: there is a niche, and in it a lamp, and the lamp inside a glass, a glass like a glittering star, fuelled from a blessed olive tree from neither east of west, whose oil almost gives light even when no fire touches it-light upon light-Allah guides whoever He will to His Light. (24:35-36)

(Tears flow during the Du’a after Witr in the third video. The audio download does not include the Du’a.)

Then, Insha’Allah, allow the heart to absorb a greater understanding of the Tafseer of these sublime verses, and thus further be consumed with light, by reading about the various definitions of Nur, the Nur of the believer and the Nur of the Holy Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, and the characteristics of olive oil from Ma’arifal Qur’an, beginning page 431.

Insha’Allah fuel the heart with even more light by imagining how it must have been here in this Mubarak City when Jibreel Alaihis Salam came to visit the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam to listen to him read and for him to listen to Jibreel, whilst in the last Ramadhan before Allah Ta’ala called His Habib SallAllahu alahi wasallam they read and listened to each other twice.

This is Brother Noushad’s impression of how Madinatun Nabi was during the glorious years the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi, his family and the Sahabah RadhiAllahu anhum were gracing this sanctified earth.

And the moon, O Majestic Moon, almost sitting atop the Abode, where the face of our Beloved SallAllahu alaihi wasallam shines with a lustre far greater than this full orb, SubhanAllah, light upon light upon light!

And Alhumdulillah for the Dunya technology that provides the physical incandescence that symbolizes the essence of Madinatun Nabi. SubhanAllah, light upon light upon light!

Insha’Allah in these remaining days all efforts are made to blaze the heart and soul with light upon light upon light upon light, Ameen.

Ameen.

Madrassah in Awali

Our Noble Lady, Ummahatul Mu’mineen Aishah RadhiAllahu anha stated that Allah Ta’ala’s Messenger SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said: The one who recites the Qur’an and is skillful therein will be with the obedient, noble, recording Angels; and the one who reads the Qur’an stammering, it being difficult for him, has two rewards.

Minutes walking from where our Noble Lady may have spoken these words is a tiny Madrassah. For more than three decades the dusty, narrow alley where it is situated has been filled with the nightingale sounds of girls seeking these rewards. All involved with this effort are Mahajireen, having left behind family and country for the sole aim of serving the Deen and sacrificing for the sake of Allah Ta’ala.

On the corner of the alley leading to the Madrassah is the quaint local Masjid. Its close proximity to Haram can be seen by the presence of the modern hotel in the background, and looking at the photos in the above link. Awali was the home to numerous of the Sahabah RadhiAllah anhum, and I ponder on the possibility that some of the original recordings of the Qur’an Majeed on leaves, bones, hides and stones may very well have been scribed in the vicinty. And Allah the Almighty knows best.

Imagination and pondering aside, the sound that arises from this humble building is as though one is already in Jannah, SubhanAllah.

Behind this sun baked faded shutter is the living room of the couple who have shared their house with thousands of girls for more than thirty years. Morning and afternoon, tiny and not so tiny feet tread the ancient Madian dust to arrive with hearts seeking to be filled with the exact Divine Words that Jibreel Alaihis Salam revealed, so close by, to our Beloved Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam for our guidance, for our salvation, for our hope of an eternal bliss, tibyanan li kulli shay’, for a clarification of everything.

Shaykh Nuh Ha Mim Kellar in the forward to Imam Al-Nawawi Rahmatullah alaihi’s Etiquettes with the Qur’an:

Allah Himself has used the word tibyan to describe the Holy Qur’an, the source of all knowledge, which He says He revealed tibyanan li kulli shay’, or as a clarification of everything. That is, it exposits in detail the things no human being can know, not the mere physical and intellectual dimensions of man in the world, which anyone can find out, but the very context of man and his reality, the “why” of being itself, whence man came, why he exists, runs his full term, dies, and what he shall meet on the other side of the impenetrable veil of death. In the Qur’an, our reality itself is a sigh, an ayah, something that points beyond itself for those who realize what it signifies, namely the tawhid or Oneness of Allah. The exposition of these facts in the from of divine scripture, which no human being could possibly produce, makes it the Supreme Book for mankind.

The Barakah from the Nur-filled simple home of only one bedroom, living room and kitchen reaches beyond the physical structure, and pierces the heart of all who enter, and spills into the nearby area. This is the trunk of a bougainvillea tree that literally grows in the middle of the kitchen, a compact space that becomes a ‘classroom’ for one of the groups of students!

The area above is open to the elements, as if there is no barrier between the heavens and the heavenly words being learnt, and applied. For the role of the teachers here also encompasses the importance of living the Adab that is contained within the covers of our Blessed Book. The curriculum that has been followed from this amazing Madrassah includes the memorization of all the main Sunnah Adiyah, the essential daily Dhikr, and the nurturing of spiritual and ethical growth, so that the heart and limbs are prepared to transform knowledge into righteous deeds and spiritual ascendance.

The hearts bursts being here. Not only seeing the dedication of the teachers, but that of the young girls, along with the worn pages of many of the Mushaf they are learning from. SubhanAllah, how many eyes have read these blessed letters, how many blessings have ascended, each letter accruing ten blessings, how many hands have held these antique pages, how many lips have moved in the struggle to plant these words deep into the heart, how many parents will be adorned with crowns on the Day of Judgement, with a radiance more beautiful than the radiance of the sun in the abode of this world?

‘Abdallah ibn Mas’ud stated that the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said: Recite the Qur’an, since God Most High will not chastise a heart that has memorized the Qur’an. This Qur’an is the banquet of God: whoever enters it is safe and whoever loves the Qur’an rejoices.

And such is this tiny Madrassah in Awali; a banquet of God.

May Allah Ta’ala’s blessings perpetually surround the best of His slaves, all those involved with teaching and learning His Divine Speech, Ameen.

Ameen.

Victory

Vanished days…disappeared never to be experienced again. The gift of time is so precious. The one who knows the real value of time knows life itself, for time is life.

Ibn al-Jawzi Rahmatullah alaihi urged his son to preserve his time:
Know dear son, that days are but hours, and hours are but breaths, and every soul is a container, hence let not any breath pass without any benefit, such that on the Day of Judgement you find an empty container and feel regret. Be aware of every hour and how it passes, and only spend it in the best possible way; do not neglect yourself, but render it accustomed to the noblest and best actions, and send to your grave that which will please you when you arrive to it.

If your capital is your life, then beware
Of spending it in what is not necessary,
For between the alternation of night and day
Is a battle, the army of which brings wonders.

Umarah al-Yamani

One’s heartbeats say to him:
Life is but minutes and seconds.
Hence build for yourself a legacy after its death
For man’s legacy is a second life.

Ahmad Shawqi

I crawl from a cocoon-like space I seemed to have retreated to these past so many days, trying to adjust to the blinding horror of reality that is still defining ‘time’ for so many suffering. Devoid of words to express what the Pen has written, the heart seeks solace in reciting Al-Fath, The Victory. The 48th Surah, revealed after the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah as the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam and the 1400 or so Sahabah RadhiAllahu anhum were on their way back to Madinah.

Surely, We have granted you an open victory, so that Allah may forgive you of your previous and subsequent faults, and may complete His favour upon you, and may guide you to a straight path, and so that Allah may support you with a mighty support. (48:1-3)

The Tafseer of Mufti Muhammad Shafi Rahmatullah alaihi details this event here. (a pdf file, beginning on page 63)

The structure designating the ground where the tent was erected for Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam when refused entry into Makkah.

The place of the Pledge of Ridwan. When Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam heard the rumour that Uthman RadhiAllahu anhu had been martyred he gathered the Sahabah RadhiAllahu anhum under an acacia tree and took a solemn pledge from them that they would fight the Quraysh to the last breath of their lives.

It is said that the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam and his Sahabah RadhiAllahu anhum were assembled on the plain of Hudaybiyyah for 19 days, (some say 20) They were gathered in a place where the only available water was a mere trickle, so Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam rinsed his mouth in the spring and had one of his arrows pitched in it. Immediately this happened water gushed, supplying their needs for the time they were confined to this area.

The following photos show what remains of the Masjid that was erected representing the place where the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam and the Companions offered Salat during the time negotiations were being made with the Quraysh.

Where the Mihrab was.

We may be lost for words, along with a sense of helplessness when trying to comprehend the reality of what is happening in Ghaza. Ulema throughout the centuries have recommended the recitation of Surah Al-Fath when facing an enemy. Insha’Allah by reliving the spirit of Hudaybiyyah, with all the lessons it has for the Ummah, Insha’Allah hearts may be consoled. May we utilize the precious gift of time allotted to us as a means of assisting victory, with diligent recitation of this Surah, Insha’Allah.

Good and evil cannot be equal. Repel evil with what is better and your enemy will become as close as an old and valued friend…(41:34)
