glimpses

…glimpses before and after Asr…

….a relatively new mode of delivering things around the courtyard. Funny seeing the brothers scoot along!

….another scooter and some of the equipment used for installing the umbrellas…

…with many fasting these Ashurah days areas have been allocated for spreading the sufrah for Iftar…

….another mode of transport that zips about, with many variables to the design and function…

….caged trolleys for rubbish and platforms for Zamzam barrels…

…and around the corner a ‘Zamzam shop’…

…and great bundle of miswak from ‘miswak’mall’ with trendy checked decor!…

….and a portable workshop…

…for the diligent masonry experts, constantly maintaining the marble…

…while I could not resist snapping this ‘vice squad’ vehicle, with brothers ascend the ramp for Ziyarah in Jannatul Baqi in the background…

….riyaleen riyaleen riyaleen, shouts the young lad selling these posters…

….as these brothers distributing large packs of dates attract an eager crowd…too eager, as I saw a determined scuffle between two brothers as they fought for their rizq….

….one of the popular bread shops where brothers were departing laden with huge bags of loaves to distribute for Iftar….

….sisters are often seen sharing sweets, contents of flasks of tea and Arabic coffee along with Iftari breads and yogurt, sometimes handing out Tasbihs, but today a sister from Bombay (she corrected me when I said Mumbai!) had a large bag of these pretty bracelets, walking around offering them to sisters as they sat in the warm wintry sunshine waiting for Salat. It was touching to watch the reactions with sisters of many nationalities embracing, hugging and kissing her. These sincere ‘Ummah’ moments echo the love and peace that defines this Luminous City.  Alhumdulillahir Rabbil ‘Aalameen. May the rippling effect of this love and peace reach across the globe, especially to all places where the darkness of oppression attempts to snuff the light of hope.

All good is from Allah Ta’ala whereas mistakes are from this humble speck. May Allah Ta’ala Bless all readers, bringing you all closer to Him and His Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam.  May He accept our humble efforts and grant us the capacity to be good and do good. Ameen.

enjoining?….forbidding?

Our Beloved Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam stated to the effect: ‘No Muslim makes Du’a, that does not contain a sin or alludes to severing the tie of kinship, except that Allah Ta’ala answers with one of three things: He gives him what he asked for immediately, or He saves a reward for him which will be presented to him on the Day of Resurrection, or He saves him from a calamity which is equivalent to the Du’a he made.” The companions then said: ‘We will then make more Du’a?’ The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam replied: “And Allah also will give more.”‘

I alluded to the shameful actions of the Muttawa, the ‘vice squad’, or ‘men of Hayya’, or the ‘religious police’, or the Commission for Enjoining the Good and Preventing Evil, in the previous post. I intended to leave it at that, but my anger, Insha’Allah for the sake of Allah Ta’ala, and not my own resentment, continued to boil over even more today towards this ‘squad’.

Backtracking to last evening. As Maghrib approached I was in the vicinity of the above photo when my attention was taken from our Master Muhammad SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, to a commotion between the ‘squad’ and hundreds of sisters sitting, patiently waiting for Adhan in this part of the courtyard. Manyothers were arriving and placing prayer mats on the cold marble. These brothers, arms flaying, were yelling at the predominantly Sub-Continent sisters, but also Indonesians, Turkish and others. All walking by were agape, stopping to watch this unbelievable sight. Eyes meeting eyes in disbelief of what was happening so close to Rasulullah SallAllahu alahi wasallam. Suddenly, thrown, from near the fence seen in the photo, a handbag landed near my feet, then another bag, and another. Because the sisters were not responding to their yelling…and not understanding Arabic anyway, the ‘squad’ were flinging their bags metres away from them towards the Jannatul Baqi side. Some did not have bags so their prayer mats were grabbed by the corner and yanked in a most aggressive manner. Some sisters ran in fear, but others refused to move, including a very old sister, still sitting on the ground, partially seen in this photo. Soon four of the ‘squad’ were seen leaning over her yelling. I admired her for her resistance and determination not to be intimidated. SubhanAllah!

The ‘squad’ were almost successful with their interpretation of ‘enjoining the good and preventing evil’, however minutes later when Adhan was called the area was once more filled with sisters, including myself, ready to offer their Salat. Even though recruitments appeared, I counted more than twelve at one time, they were outnumbered. They remained well after Iqama, as they continued flaying arms and yelling. Two maintained a vigil in front on the Saff, which was a continuation of the first Saff, impertinently pacing back and forth in front of the sisters, as if indicating they had the upper hand.

I have not only witnessed many ugly scenes over the years involving these brothers, and have been ‘spoken to’, as well as being aware of so many other incidents related to their behaviour throughout the Kingdom.  Sadly, whatever they do is always condoned, with statement after statement upholding their ‘dignified’ manner. What impressions do these new Hujjaj go home with?

And then more….

Most will be familiar with the holy places in the following photographs. In today’s edition of the Arabic daily, Al Watan, an article outlines the requests from the Muttawa in Makkah for action to be taken with regard to the following Mubarak sites.

Mu’alla, the resting place of our Lady Khadijah RadhiAllahu anha, along with many others of our illustrious predecessors deserving our adoration.

THE MUTTAWA WANT THESE GRAVES TO BE MOVED.

The resting place of Maimoonah, Ummul Mu’mineen RadhiAllahu anha, located by the side of the Makkah-Madinah Road, approximately 20 km north of Makkah. This is also the palce where our Blessed Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam and our Noble Lady were wed.

THE MUTTAWA WANT THIS GRAVE MOVED.

The alleged resting place of Hawwa Alaihas Salam, the wife of Adam Alaihis Salam in Jeddah.

THE MUTTAWA WANT THIS SITE MOVED.

Jabal Nur, where Jibreel Alaihis Salam first revealed himself to our Beloved Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, imparting the first revelations from the Preserved Tablets.

THE MUTTAWA WANT THIS FENCED OFF.

The rugged area leading to Ghar Thaur where our Beloved Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam hid with Abu Bakr As Siddiq RadhiAllahu anhu when fleeing Makkah.

THE MUTTAWA WANT THIS FENCED OFF.

Jabal Rahmah, where our Beloved Messenger SallAllahu alaihi wasallam delivered his Farewell Sermon.

THE MUTTAWA WANT THIS FENCED OFF.

May Allah Ta’ala forgive me for overstepping a line I have tried to maintain with this blog. May His Subhanahu wa Ta’ala’s forgiveness be as great as His Kingdom towards us all, Ameen

May we be like the Sahabah RadhiAllahu anhum, and make more Du’a, with the hope that Allah Ta’ala will not only give us more, but better, in every aspect related to oppression within the Ummah as is seen in these times of Fitan. May our Du’a include sincere words for the Deen to return to these Sacred Places as taught by our Beloved Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. Ameen.

Du’a is the only weapon for the believer. So lets make more effort in sharpening it! NOW! Insha’Allah!

Ameen.

Maghrib

Lord, increase me in knowledge. (20:114),

..thus ended Sheikh Budair’s recitation in Maghrib this evening. Always a most befitting request to our Rabb Subhanahu wa Ta’ala. May He respond by instilling more and more understanding in our lives of what He favours from us and what will eventually lead us all to His Garden, to His Countenance, and to be by the Kawthar with His Habib SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, Ameen.

May all the Hujjaj be returning with the Nur of increased knowledge…

…sharing it with their loved ones as they share dates, prayer mats, Zamzam, trinkets and all other gifts

from the markets around the Haramain..

…may they all carry an excess load of love…

…for Allah Ta’ala and His Rasul, SallAllahu alaihi wasallam…

…for each other….

…for the Ummah…

….with a loving ‘Alhumdulillah‘ on the lips and in the heart for all that is decreed…

….and a love for the creation…

…in all its manifestations…

…may the Muttawa’s love soon change to reflect the supreme love that exudes from our Most Beloved SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, ending their harsh harassment of sisters…

…may all hearts soften by the effect of being in a close proximity, whether physically or spiritually, to the perfection of manners and morals…

‘Allah Ta’ala has elevated the dignity of His Prophet and granted him virtues, beautiful qualities and special prerogatives. He has praised his high dignity so overwhelmingly that neither tongue not pen are sufficient [to describe him]. In His Book He has clearly and openly demonstrated his high rank and praised him for his qualities of character and his noble habits. He asks His servants to attach themselves to him and to follow him obediently. It is God- great is His Majesty!- who grants honour and grace, who purifies and refines, He that lauds and praises and grants a perfect recompense… He places before our eyes his noble nature, perfected and sublime in every respect. He grants him perfect virtue, praiseworthy qualities, noble habits and numerous preferences. He supports his message with radiant miracles, clear proofs, and apparent signs.’  Ash-Shifa of Qadi Iyad Rahmatullah alaihi

Lord, increase us all in the knowledge of loving him SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, thus earning Your love,  Ameen

Ameen.

umbrellas, turbans, farewell tears and..

Headlines reveal that pilgrims are leaving this Mubarak City of Light and Peace in droves, but thousands are still filling the Masjid and flowing into the courtyards, with the Saff extending into the streets during Salat, SubhanAllah!

Large groups congregate offering their farewell Salam to our Blessed Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. Tears accompany sobbing prayers as wave upon wave jostle to be near the Court of Love and Goodness, the honoured abode of the Mercy to the Worlds SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. None can have faith unless he SallAllahu alaihi wasallam is dearer than parents, children and all mankind. How dear this reality is as the faithful near departure. Ya Rabb, sow this realization deeply and deeper into the hearts of the entire Ummah, Ameen.

The shaded areas are most popular in the afternoon sun, where the most magnificent turbans are paraded.

Others seem oblivious of the crowds around them as they sleep, maybe dreaming of being this close to HabibuLlah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam in Jannah…

…where there will be no need of shade from umbrellas, Ya Rabb.

The installation is progressing rapidly, while at the same time providing a fascinating display of precision technology, attracting a constant gallery of onlookers. The carpets are now spread from Babus Salam almost all the way across to the opposite fence, with Zamzam containers and portable Qur’an cases also being made available.

There are now 16 umbrellas in this section. Still no signs of any in the sisters areas. Insha’Allah soon!

Alhumdulillah the past few days have seen carpets reaching almost to the perimeter of the courtyard for sisters, which previously was ignored.

This article details various statistics regarding the work being done around Masjid Nabawi along with projected figures of worshippers being accommodated with the new extensions. The heading is deceiving as all the work mentioned has been on going for some years now. Plus other features not mentioned include the planned construction of seven more pedestrian tunnels and the extension of the main traffic tunnel to alleviate the heavy congestion in the area around the date market. There has been runours that it is to be relocated away from the immediate Haram area, Allahu ‘Alum.

While information on developments in Makkah are included in the ‘Kingdom in 2008′ supplement in Arab News today.

And just as we thought the net was at the end of its cranky behaviour the news is that it will hobble along for a while longer, ALHUMDULILLAH! Posting has been excruciatingly slow! But a mere hiccup compared to what our brothers and sisters are confronted with in Gaza. Insha’Allah may we all be constant in our Du’a and others acts of Ibadah on their behalf.

I wonder why the Imams do not mention the catastrophe after each Salat in the Haramain. Calling the thousands that are still in Masjid al-Haram and beside Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam to offer Du’a and reciting for the situation would surely reach Allah Ta’ala. La hawla wa la quwata illa biLlah.

yesterday and today

Yesterday

Today

I just lost an entire post, Alhumdulillah…and with the net being ever so cantankerous, and current commitments away from this screen,  to get these photos posted again is all I can manage for the moment :)

Allahu Akbar!

Ameen.

hajj vendors

These temporary ‘cafes’ are popular with the pilgrims staying in the older quarters away from the dense hotel complexes in the central area around Haram. A carpet was laid behind this counter for customers to sit and relax in the warm wintry afternoon sun…

…like this one across the road, where a young boy is taking an order…

…these small booths are rented out. And even though they stock the common trinkets found in the majority of shops, they still attract buyers…

…hundreds of family and friends in far flung places will be delighted to receive gifts from the Holy Lands, regardless of them being imported from far flung places….

…some scatter their stock on the ground avoiding the cost of renting….while the sisters with their wooden trolleys move about according to where the crowds may be, seeking their rizq…

…while others use their vehicles to display items, the back of pick up trucks line the roads to and from Haram….these shoe traders would be doing a roaring trade in Iraq these days!

Unfortunately too many traders in the established shops try to fleece the Hujjaj, who already have paid extravagant prices for travel and accommodation. During this Hajj season I have needed to purchase various items where the price quoted has been an increase of more than 40% compared to before Hajj. When I confront the shop keepers, asking if it is fair to treat the guests like this, and explaining what I had paid for the same item they happily sell it at the pre-Hajj price, smirking as they take the money. Meeting with friends and hearing of their stories of extortion is a sad reflection on the attitude too many have towards the pilgrims.

One shudders at the thought of how the scene may be on That Fateful Day where we all will be questioned about each and every detail of our existence. Accounts of us drowning in our perspiration due to the length and degree of explaining our actions do not seem excessive. May Allah Ta’ala’s Mercy flood our hearts before it is too late.

O Allah, I seek forgiveness for every sin, I committed, about which, of course, You know inside and out, from the beginning to the end of my life, whether committed deliberately or intentionally, few or many, abstruse or manifest, old or new, secretly carried out or openly done; and for whatever wrong I have done I turn repentant unto You and beseech You to bless Muhammad and the children of Muhammad and forgive all my unjust acts I did to wrong the people (because they have rights which I have to recognize and fulfill) but You have full authority to forgive those wrongdoings whenever and howsoever You wish, O the most merciful. (Arabic and transliteration and more Du’a for seeking forgiveness here and here)

Ameen.

especially enjoying….

…surprises in the alley ways…

…the freezing synthetic marble, whilst at the same time allowing the feet to ‘pretend’ they are following the footsteps of our Beloved Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam as they blessed the dust…

…reminders, even when filling the car…

…wintry green foliage with a touch of ‘Paris’..

…and the Green Dome…not as a green dome, but for being the Sanctuary of the most beloved of the Beloved SallAllahu alaihi wasallam…

…always bursting with more than a touch of hope, love, mercy, compassion, humility, justice…

….the serving of others…

….the sky, the setting sun, the shapes, colours patterns, sounds of the new Hujjaj….

…the generosity between brothers and sisters of this glorious Deen…

….the moon…again…still….

…the attention to cleanliness and comfort…

….the appearance of a new blog by a special Bheti….

…and the morning discipline of documenting the ordinary….

…what may you be ‘especially enjoying?’

~*~

Alhumdulillah for the extended time meeting with Hujjaj and hearing of their emotional journey and experiences, for the moment reducing the time I have for posting…Insha’Allah a semblance of routine will return soon and once again I will be ‘especially enjoying’ being here….when stamina matches intention :)
