…a curtain for the paradise behind…

“Every soul shall taste death in the end; to Us shall you be brought back.” (29:57)

…how we all know this to be the end reality…but how do we truly encompass this ultimate meeting with our Rabb Subhanahu wa Ta’ala as we live each day as if the end will never come…assuming Malakul Maut Alahis Salam, will surely visit when we are old and withered, crumpled and brittle as an autumn leaf…when eye sight is feeble…the body wracked with aches and pains…the memory fading and the breath short and crackly…

…how we all know we surely will never escape the beckoning of Malakul Maut…when he has been commissioned nothing can prevent his visit…

…but as much as death is the only inevitable thing in life, the shock that Allah Ta’ala desires a young vibrant and lovable mother, wife, sister, daughter to be called back to Him jolts the heart…Inna liLlahi wa inna ilaihi rajeoon…

…the expat community in this City of Radiance are rejoicing on the one hand that such a dear Mu’minah has been granted what we all desire with our Hijrah here, to be blessed to be in Jannatul Baqi, SubhanAllah, but it is the sudden reminder that Allah Ta’ala is the Al Hikmah and only He knows what is best for any of us…He is the One and Only Al Muhyi, the Giver of Life and Al Mumit, the Taker of Life…and He is the One to decide when and how to take what belongs to Him…our life and living…all is a gift on loan…

…the following poignant Rumi has been posted as a balm and solace for other loved ones who are residing in Baqi Gharqad and who will surely be raised on the Day of Resurrection with our Beloved Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam…(Sister Z, Dr Abu Bakr, Baba Ji, along with many other posts from the archives in the Baqi Gharqad and death category)

when i die
when my coffin
is being taken out
you must never think
i am missing this world

don’t shed any tears
don’t lament or
feel sorry
i’m not falling
into a monster’s abyss

when you see
my corpse is being carried
don’t cry for my leaving
i’m not leaving
i’m arriving at eternal love

when you leave me
in the grave
don’t say goodbye
remember a grave is
only a curtain
for the paradise behind

you’ll only see me
descending into a grave
now watch me rise
how can there be an end
when the sun sets or
the moon goes down

it looks like the end
it seems like a sunset
but in reality it is a dawn
when the grave locks you up
that is when your soul is freed

have you ever seen
a seed fallen to earth
not rise with a new life
why should you doubt the rise
of a seed named human

have you ever seen
a bucket lowered into a well
coming back empty
why lament for a soul
when it can come back
like Joseph from the well

when for the last time
you close your mouth
your words and soul
will belong to the world of
no place no time

A Celebration of Life and Love

…may we be thankful and grateful for every aspect of the life we are given…may this thankfulness be active in our every step and breath with actions that strive for Allah Ta’ala’s sake…may we be constantly mindful of what we are doing, who we are doing it for and how it will be recorded…continuously remembering that Malakul Maut may visit at any given moment…may we work for the Hereafter, for our salvation, for an end with unwavering Iman…may we all be believers who are not afraid of death because we have made preparations for it by striving to perfect our faith… seeking knowledge so that we will reap the fruits of  a lush and bountiful sowing…

… it would be most pleasing to know that dear readers will make Du’a for Sister A’s soul,  her bereaved family and friends, both here in Al Madinah Al Munawwarah as well as loved ones back ‘home’…InshaAllah Al Fatihah and Surah Ya Seen…

…may Sister A have already arrived at eternal love and now be behind the curtain delighting in the Garden of Bliss,  Ameen…

O Allah! We beg of You unwavering faith, unending grace and the company of our Beloved Messenger SallAllahu alaihi wasallam in high stations of everlasting Paradise. O Allah! Grant us martyrdom in Thy cause and bless us with death in the City of Your Messenger. Ameen.

JUMA’AH MUBARAK!

All good is from Allah Ta’ala whereas mistakes are from this humble speck. May Allah Ta’ala Bless all readers, bringing you all closer to Him and His Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam.  May He accept our humble efforts and grant us the capacity to be good and do good. Ameen.

…recently seen…

…the central pillars at each of the main entrances are wrapped in this protective covering…

…it was a mystery as to what new work was being done until I passed this fenced off entrance…

…it seems new ramps are being installed for wheelchair accessibility, Alhumdulillah…

…the sand storms and haze have finally shifted, Alhumdulillah…but while they were veiling our Blessed City of Light everything was shrouded in a muted silvery effect…

…renovations…constant changes…sounds of drilling, banging, bashing and swirls of dust never far from Haram…

…unprecedented crowds fill the courtyards…

…photos hardly convey the atmosphere or the density of the crowds…

…the pedestrian tunnel is once again closed due to work going on…this is the second time in about one year that changes are being made…

…empties waiting for the Zamzam filling station to open…

…after Ishraq the majority return to hotels for breakfast and rest so the courtyard is a good time to soak in serenity…

…immersed in Dhikr as the brothers roll up the carpets…

…until spreading them again in the afternoon…

…bags of seed being sold for the Jannatul Baqi pigeons…

…umbrella cleaning operation…

…a local tameez, oven baked bread, dhal, or adz and ful shop…

…a nutritious and cheap meal for a few riyals…

…interesting recent articles I haven’t had time to post…

The Haj and Umrah Research Institute at Umm Al-Qura University has completed studies to introduce a cable car system to transport people to the historic caves of Hira and Al-Thawr in Makkah.

(this is totally mind boggling!! given that there are signs saying to visit these places is bid’ah and how the Mutawwa preach against such visits…AstaghfiruLlah is this a money spinner project?? And HOW do they ever see the elderly going up on a chair lift…to get into Gahr Hirra is an obstacle even from the summit…and how will such crowds manage in these precarious places once they carried to the top??? Boggling indeed!!!)

~*~

Relatives will not have difficulties identifying the graves of their loved ones buried in Riyadh after local authorities approved a project to mark each grave using electronic devices,

~*~

Many children are lining the streets of Madinah and near traffic lights to beg for money while watching out for special anti-beggary units

Al-Baida valley is known as Wadi Al-Jinn, because the power of jinn is supposed to be present in this place. There are a lot of myths about this valley. Vehicles in this valley reportedly move upward without any need to push the accelerator pedal. If one enters the Wadi and switches off his car engine, it will apparently start going in reverse. It is also claimed that the mountains in this region have some magnetic powers.

…this post was ready last night, but when I clicked on publish all was lost!!! And after re-doing it, it was lost again!!!!!!!!!!! Some very not nice words…AstaghfiruLlah escaped between gritted teeth and lots of yelling to a Mobily tech support guy ensued…our troubles with their service has annoyed us for months without any satisfactory resolution…I purposefully mention the company so that you avoid them as a choice if you are needing a network when here…
…Alhumdulillah I have been meeting so many wonderful people so far during this Umrah season, with Insha’Allah many more in the next few weeks…trying to even think about the blog, which is still being tinkered with, has been difficult, so I have decided for the month of April to only post a photo a day…this humble speck needs to balance responsibilities and realize limitations…so this idea is to at least have some presence here rather than none at all…sorry dear readers…your understanding and Du’a is very much needed, Insha’allah…

…Makkan metamorphosis…one…

…the changes are massive…no photographs could convey the extent of the demolitions…hundreds of buildings, thousands of potential rooms for pilgrims gone…gone before alternatives are ready…hard not to question such decisions…Insha’Allah the next few posts will attempt to cover some of the destruction and some of the construction, with minimal words…the area that is in the process of being demolished is al-Misfalah…a huge wedge beginning between Darul Taqwa, Hilton and Abraj al-Bayt and extending way back away from Haram…the first two photos are of the newly renovated Elaf Kinda…tucked directly behind Abraj al-Bayt…

…during the previous visit to Makkah al-Mukarramah it was thought the work being carried out was preparing it for demolition…but it was totally gutted and now ‘born anew’…maybe this is the fate of many of the following, what seem structurally sound buildings seen being stripped of everything but the skeletal walls…Allahu ‘Alum…

…looking towards Haram with the Elaf Kinda to the right and the side of one of the Abraj towers to its right…Hilton on the left…this bridge marks the beginning of the demolitions…

…some hotels remain standing but are devoid of all internal features and are merely a shell…

…stripped bare…

…even relatively newer buildings…and what of the smaller masaajid that are tucked away in this area??

…some businesses are trying to remain functional for as long as they can…this used to be hub of activity for pilgrims to purchase gifts…and one of the few places for simple food outlets…the sad trend promotes the expensive franchises of fast food companies…

…a ceiling stripped of every conceivable piece of wiring and ducting…

…a sleeping homeless man…

…rubble, rubbish and rats…

…side by side…the demise of one shop next to another determined to seek any last remaining customers…

…establishments displaying whatever could be salvaged for sale…

…the rising new framed by remnants of the old…

…one of the several hotels we have stayed in…empty…

…on and on are vacant ghost like places…

…a film of dust already veiling Haram…imagine how it will be once these hundreds of buildings crumble…people with breathing problems are staying away…

…the contrast…the condemned with the lavish skyscrapers taking over…

…one wonders if any of these older style buildings may be restored so future generations may at least see an example of how some older Makkah styles were…

…many of the features are worth saving for their unique craftsmanship…I have seen such carving painted and used as a wall feature…beautiful…

Our Beloved Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said: By Allah, I am not afraid of your poverty but I am afraid that you will lead a life of luxury as past nations did, whereupon you will compete with each other for it, as they competed for it, and it will destroy you as it destroyed them. (Bukhari)

And: The Day of Judgement has come close, and mankind will only increase their desire for this world, and they will only go farther and farther away from Allah.

He SallAllahu alaihi wasallam would make this Du’a:
O Allah! I seek your refuge from the evils of the fitnah of wealth, and the evils of the fitnah of poverty.

Both poverty and wealth are fitnahs — ways by which Allah tries and tests us…may Allah Ta’ala save and guide us, and bless the Haramain, and bless the Haramain, and bless the Haramain, Ameen…

…hadhaa as-sabaah…

…every second singing SUBHANALLAH!!!!!!!!!!!

…every blink…every breath glorifying Allah Ta’ala’s MAGNIFICENCE!!!!!!!!!!!

…were the 70,000 Angels returning after offering Salam to the Best of Creation SallAllahu alaihi wasallam?

…the gentle breeze whispered it so…the soaring pigeons echoed the same…

…were preparations for the coming celebration of the birth of the most precious gift, Allah Ta’ala’s Habib, the Mercy to the Worlds SallAllahu alaihi wasallam in progress?…one wonders…

…every cloud dance testifying…

…while umbrella maintenance work never ceases…joining the preparations…

…teams of several brothers wash and scrub the inside, where already permanent marks of the Mubarak Madanian dust is evident…what wonderful views they must have overlooking the Abode of Peace, SubhanAllah!

…do you realize that the only pillars not to be fitted with umbrellas are the ones directly in line with the Dome of Felicity…

…was the plan to make this area devoid of shade so as to detract pilgrims from sitting there??

…one wonders…

…I counted six sets of footprints indenting the surface…

…and I counted numerous sets of five, six, seven commandos patrolling back and forth between Babul Baqi and the Baqi fence…

…with riot gear helmets and many flexing their batons…

…while dozens of others lined the walls…

…back and forth…back and forth…back and forth…

…risky taking photos…there were hundreds gathered…

…one wonders…

…and wonders even more seeing their presence in Jannatul Baqi…

…with police and Haia brothers…

…one wonders why the need for such a show of force…surely all protection and safety is with Allah Ta’ala…

…and do not panic…superman was there!!!

…one wonders about the serenity and fragrance of Paradise that swirls around these Mubarak stones and dust…as tears mingle with deep breaths…

…Insha’Allah my begging is to be here…I request your Du’a for such an abode…

…I recently had a huge print made of this high resolution map as a visual aid for Du’a…individual plots are so clear…I thought maybe I could choose an exact place…but am leaving it to my Rabb…He knows best and is the Best of Planners, Alhumdulillah…imagine rising with all the noble and blessed residents of Jannatul Baqi, the Ahlul Bayt, the thousands of Sahabah RadhiAllahu anhum, the blessed residents of Makkan graveyards, the numerous pious scholars, Awliya and known friends whom Allah Ta’ala called back before I could say farewell…

…imagine witnessing our Beloved Messenger of Allah Ta’ala SallAllahu alaihi wasallam coming to greet the Baqi inhabitants, with Abu Bakr, Umar RadhiAllahu anhumaa and Isa Alaihis Salam by his side…imagine…imagine…imagine…

…the words of truth…no wondering…

All good is from Allah Ta’ala whereas mistakes are from this humble speck. May Allah Ta’ala Bless all readers, bringing you all closer to Him and His Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam.  May He accept our humble efforts and grant us the capacity to be good and do good. Ameen.

…endless gifts…

‘I seek refuge in Your forgiveness from Your punishment, and I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your annoyance, and I seek Your refuge from Yourself. I cannot praise You as fully as You deserve. You are exactly as You have defined Yourself.’

Staring blankly at the faint majestic moon suspended over the golden spire of an umbrella in the courtyard of Masjid Nabawi….

…changing every second. The tones of the soft powder blue sky gradually deepening and thus the moon shine gradually brightening. Sublime contrasts playing. Affecting everything the eye gazes upon. One glance registers the expectant moon as a shimmery organza, minutes later, molten silver, followed by the subtlest shades of blush. Moment upon moment upon precious moment a gift, a stream of endless gifts,  SubhanAllah SubhanAllah SubhanAllah!

…almost upon us is the gift of Nisful Sha’ban, the annual time when Du’a is answered. The night Allah Ta’ala descends to the nearest heaven at the beginning of sunset, when the sky is painted with a palette from rubies and pearls and the moon is a burnished orb.  Allah Ta’ala says: Is there no one asking forgiveness that I may forgive them? Is there no one asking sustenance that I may grant them sustenance? Is there no one under trial that I may relieve them? Is there not such-and-such, is there not such-and-such, and so forth until until dawn rises.

And everything is apportioned.

And so it was apportioned by Allah Ta’ala that just over one year ago He blessed a very precious soul, with her husband and daughter, to make Hijrah to this Radiant City, just as He apportioned to take her back to him a few days ago.

Inna liLlahi wa inna ilaihi rajeoon.

The vision of her vibrant beauty, the eagerness her heart emitted in her ardent pursuit seeking Deeni knowledge, her devotion to her daughter with special needs, her undying love for the Path Allah Ta’ala had guided her to, all this and more keeps filling my inner gaze. The last time we were together was at a gathering where Shaykh Zulfiqar, may Allah Ta’ala continue to elevate his rank, was talking about the virtues of Madinatun Nabi and said, “to die in Madinah is akin to dying in Jannah”, meaning Insha’Allah that is where she is, Ameen. The family were returning from Makkah having just performed Umrah, so all sins had been cleansed, being taken as a Shaheedah, SubhanAllah.

Blankly staring at the moon as it glides on its set path in one more rotation before announcing the blessed night of Nisful Sha’ban envelopes the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam’s City, it appears as an illuminated circular piece of shroud that this sister is now adorned in. A stark reminder of how we all will be dressed in such a raiment.  What deeds will be wrapped therein when it is our turn? What gifts will You hide between the folds? Ya Rabb, take Your loved ones as You have so mercifully taken this loved sister.

The eyes glance around…scanning a courtyard of thousands who have been invited to this most Sacred of Places, and I wonder who is ready for that final inevitable visit? What deeds will be concealed in our shrouds?

Tears well, as I know this needy speck is not ready. This sudden death delivers a sharp reminder, along with the promises Allah Ta’ala makes for us in the coming night. His Mercy is never ending, His endless gifts are in every breath, His love for us eternal…how much do we give in return? Are we prepared?

Maybe the young heavily pregnant Turkish girl in the hot pink dress and floral hijab is ready?

Maybe the wrinkled toothless Sudanese sister, with a smile that beams like the moon above is ready?

Maybe the mother pulling her small daughter up by the hair is ready?

Maybe the sister feeding her toddler a date is ready?

Maybe the patient ones having their bags searched in the crowded doorway are ready?

Maybe the one walking barefoot on the hot marble is ready?

Maybe the young girl pushing a wheelchair is ready?

Or maybe the elderly sister in the wheel chair is ready?

Maybe the friend from Karachi I am sitting with is ready?

Maybe the happy little one pretending to take photos with a yellow plastic camera is ready?

Maybe the sister on duty mopping around the water cooler is ready?

Maybe the beautiful recently engaged Egyptian sister beside me telling me she will marry after Ramadhan is ready?

Maybe….maybe…

Maybe you are ready?

Ya Rabb Ya Rabb Ya Rabb

‘I seek refuge in Your forgiveness from Your punishment, and I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your annoyance, and I seek Your refuge from Yourself. I cannot praise You as fully as You deserve. You are exactly as You have defined Yourself.’

May we be persistent with our begging this Nisful Sha’ban. May hearts be moved to gently mention this beautiful soul Allah Ta’ala has chosen to take back, along with all grieving over her sudden departure, Ameen.

May hearts be open to the endless gifts showering one and all, and may arms be wide open to receive the stream of gifts that Allah Ta’ala is so generously offering on Nisful Sha’ban, Ameen.

Is there no one asking forgiveness that I may forgive them? Is there no one asking forgiveness that I may forgive them? Is there no one asking sustenance that I may grant them sustenance? Is there no one under trial that I may relieve them? Is there not such-and-such, is there not such-and-such, and so forth until until dawn rises.
