…remembering Badr…

The Battle of Badr is the most important battle in the whole of human history as it firmly established Islam as the only true religion for the whole of humanity till the end of time. It took place on 17 Ramadan 2 A.H, 624 C.E. The beloved holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, together with 313 of his Sahaba (Companions) and angels sent by Allah defeated about 1000 better armed polytheists of the tribe of Quraysh.

We should remind ourselves that Asma’ Ahl Badr (the names of the Muslim warriors of the Battle of Badr) are Jalali (Majestic). They need the Jamal (Beauty) of Salawat (Invocation of Blessings) to cool them. So before we recite these, and after completing the recitation, it is recommended to recite Durood Shareef 100 times. Or instead, we can recite Qasidah al-Burda.  Once we have recited the Salawat, we can come to the Asma’ Ahl al-Badr.

Names of the Muslim Warriors in the Battle of Badr
Please recite Sayyidinaa before each name and Radi Allahu Ta’ala ‘Anhu (Allah is Pleased with Him) after each name.

Allahumma Agithna ya Giyath al-Mustaghitheen bi Haqqi

All good is from Allah Ta’ala whereas mistakes are from this humble speck. May Allah Ta’ala Bless all readers, bringing you all closer to Him and His Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam.  May He accept our humble efforts and grant us the capacity to be good and do good. Ameen.

…Wadi Ranuna…

…Insha’Allah these blessed days of Rabi’al Awwal hearts are filled with reliving and reflecting upon the Seerah of our Noble Nabi SallAllahu alaihi wasallam…pondering over his perfected character and how we can act upon his esteemed examples…Ziyarahs around his Mubarak City always flame the love for him SallAllahu alaihi wasallam and all he bequeathed us to act upon…a visit to Wadi Ranuna called this speck…

…it was noon on the day of Juma’ah when our Beloved Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam set off with his companions…some from Bani ‘Amr who had accompanied him from Quba…they stopped in the valley of Ranuna where the Khazrajite clan of Bani Salim resided…accounts say there were approximately one hundred men, including some who came from Bani Najjar to join them…the people of Banu Salim begged, “O Prophet of Allah, you stayed at the homes of our cousins for a number of days, reward us too with something, for they will pride themselves over us till the Day of Judgement that you stayed with them”…but he explained that it was his faithful camel Qaswa that was under Allah Ta’ala’s command…

…take the time this Juma’ah for the heart to absorb the eloquence of the Khutbah delivered by our Blessed Messenger on the very first Juma’ah…and Insha’Allah to feel a shift these words have upon your condition…may hearts receive a Rabi’al Awwal gift through this profound reminder…

Praise and glory to Allah!
I praise and glorify Him,
I seek His help and forgiveness,
I seek His guidance,
I believe in Him and do not deny Him,
and I take as my enemy those who deny Him.

I bear witness that there is no God except Allah
alone without partner,
and that Muhammad is His worshipper and Messenger
whom He sent with right guidance and the true Religion,
with light and admonition,
after an interval of time without Messengers,
in which knowledge had waned,
misguidance had spread among people,
time had become short,
the Hour had dawned, and the end is near.

Whoever obeys Allah and His Prophet has followed right,
and whoever disobeys them has gone astray,
wasted his opportunity, and truly gone far into misguidance.

I call upon you to fear Allah!
Truly the best to which a Muslim can call another Muslim
is that he urges him to seek the hereafter
and command him to fear Allah.

Beware, therefore, when “Allah bids you beware of Him” (3:28).
There is no better faithful advice than this.
There is no better admonition than this.
Truly it is a safeguard (taqwâ) for anyone that heeds it
in true Godwariness (wajal) and devout fear.
Truly it is trusty help toward what you seek of the hereafter.

Whoever sets aright what lies between himself and Allah
in matters both private and public,
intending nothing thereby other than Allah’s countenance:
it will be for him a reminder in his worldly existence
and provision for him after death,
when a human being finds himself depending solely
upon the deeds he has sent forth,
and whatever else, “he will long that there might be
a mighty space of distance between it and that (evil).
Allah bids you beware of Him.
And Allah is full of pity for (His) bondmen.”
(3:30).

By the One Whose Word is true
and Who discharged His promise:
it shall not be otherwise than what I have described!
For He says – Exalted and Almighty:
“The sentence that comes from Me cannot be changed,
and I am in no wise a tyrant unto the slaves”
(50:29).

Beware Allah in your worldly matters
as well as your otherworldly ones,
in secret and openly.
For whoever fears Allah, He shall absolve him of his evils
and grant him a great reward.
Whoever fears Allah has achieved a huge victory.
Truly fear of Allah protects one from what He detests.
It protects one from His punishment.
It protects one from His wrath.
Truly fear of Allah makes one illustrious
and raises one’s rank.

Take your share but do not fall short regarding Allah’s side.
Allah has taught you His book
and made plain for you the way to Him,
so as to make known (li ya`lama) those who are truthful
and to make known the liars.

Therefore, excel in goodness
just as Allah has excelled in goodness toward you.
Take His enemies for your enemies.
“And strive for Allah
with the endeavor which is His right.
He has chosen you and has named you Muslims”
(22:78)
“that he who perished might perish by a clear proof and he who survived might survive by a clear proof” (8:42).

And “There is no strength save in Allah” (18:39)
so remember and mention Allah abundantly
and work for what comes after death!
Whoever sets aright what lies between himself and Allah,
Allah shall give him sufficiency
in what lies between himself and humankind.

That is because Allah pronounces judgment on mankind
while they do not pronounce judgment against Him;
and He owns rights over them
while they own no right over Him.

Allah is greatest!
And there is no change nor power
but with Allah the Exalted, the Almighty!

…Abu Khaythamah RadhiAllahu anhu was one of the Sahabah from Bani Salim…when the army set off for the Ghazwa in Tabuk, during the extreme heat of summer, he remained in his home enjoying ease and comfort and khidmah from his family…however his mind was persistently thinking of the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam and his companions as they travelled in harsh and scorching conditions during the arduous journey…he found little peace as these thoughts plagued him…so he gathered a few provisions and left to join the army…when he finally joined them our merciful Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam made special Du’a for him, SubhanAllah!…what lessons of sacrifice we can take from such stories…asking ourselves what sacrifices can we make to improve our condition?

…looking north from the rubble of the restoration work of Masjid Juma’ah two minarets of Masjid Quba can be seen just beyond the residential buildings…such a pity that this short 800 meters of Mubarak land connecting these historic places could not have been developed into park land…

…while looking south is the Ottoman Quba fort…it was in this area that the children sang the welcoming Ta’ala Al Badra Alayna (Arabic lyrics with English translation) at the time of our Beloved Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam’s entrance into Madinah…

…topping off this Ziyarah was a delicious wholesome meal prepared by Dear Sister Iman who lives near this Mubarak Wadi Ranuna, Masha’Allah…

JUMA’AH MUBARAK!

Ameen.

…born inside the Ka’abah…

…goose-bumpy…that’s how it is when pondering on the way Allah Ta’ala has planned, is planning and continues to plan…

…a child born in the Ka’abah…the only one ever from the entire history of mankind…approximately five years before our Beloved Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam…he was from a very affluent family and possessed a sharp intellect…they developed a lasting friendship…time passes…as an adult he purchases a slave from the famous Okaz market place…gifting it to his Aunt…the sister of his father Hazm…the Aunt…is our Noble Lady Khadija RadhiAllahu anha…who marries Muhammad ibn ‘Abdullah and gifts her slave boy…Zayd, to her newly wed husband SallAllahu alaihi wasallam…Hakim ibn Hizam RadhiAllahu anhu was that blessed child to be born inside the Ka’abah…and how could the only one ever to be blessed with such an entry into the world never be destined to be given Hidayah…but it was not until almost twenty years after Prophethood, during the time of Conquest of Makkah that his heart finally submitted…SubhanAllah…goose-bumpy!

Just as we are astonished at the late acceptance of Islam on the part of Hakim, he himself later in life was also amazed. In fact, as soon as he accepted Islam and tasted the sweetness of iman (faith), he began to feel deep regret for every moment  of his life as a mushrik and a denier of God’s religion and of His Prophet.
His son once saw him weeping after his acceptance of Islam and asked: “Why are you weeping, my father’?” “Many things cause me to weep, my dear son. The most grievous is the length of time it took for me to become a Muslim. Acceptance of  Islam would have given me so man opportunities to do good which I missed even if I were to have spent the earth in gold.  My life was spared at the battle of Badr and also at the battle of Uhud. After Uhud. I said to myself. I would not help any  Quraysh against Muhammad, may the peace and blessings of God be upon him, and I would not leave Makkah. Then, whenever I felt like accepting Islam I would look at other men among the Quraysh. Men of power and maturity who remained  firmly attached to the ideas and practices of Jahiliyyah and I would fall in line with them and their neighbors… Oh, how I wish I had not done so. Nothing has destroyed us except the blind following of our forefathers and elders. Why should I not  weep, my son?”

Hakim ibn Hazm performed the Hajj after becoming a Muslim. He took with him one hundred fine camels and sacrificed them all in order to achieve nearness to God. In the following Hajj, he stood on Arafat. With him were one hundred slaves. To each  he gave a pendant of silver on which was engraved: “Free for the sake of God Almighty from Hakim ibn Hazm.” On a third Hajj, he took with him a thousand sheep – yes a thousand sheep and sacrificed them all at Mina to feed the poor Muslims in order to attain nearness to God.

Two additional inspiring incidents from Hakim ibn Hazm RadhiAllah anhu’s life, firstly, from before he embraced Islam, at the time when the Quraysh boycotted the Muslims.

One day Abu Jahl, who was continually on the look out for those trying to assist the Muslims, met Hakim, RadhiAllahu anhu with a slave carrying a bag of flour, and they appeared to be making for the dwellings of the Bani Hashim. He accused them of taking food to the enemy and threatened to denounce Hakim before Quraysh. While they were arguing, Abu l-Bakhtari, another man of Asad, came and asked what was the matter, and when it was explained to him he said to Abu Jahl: “It is his Aunt’s flour and she hath sent to him for it. Let the man go on his way.” Neither Hakim nor Abu -Bakhtari were Muslims, but the passing of this bag of flour from one member of the clan of Asad to another could concern no one outside that clan. The interference of the Makhzumite was outrageous and intolerable; and when Abu Jahl persisted Abu l-Bakhtari picked up a camel’s jaw bone and brought it down on his head with such force that he was half stunned and fell to the ground, whereupon they trampled him heavily underfoot, to the gratification of Hamzah RadhiAllahu anhu who happened to come by at that moment.

And secondly after his Hidayah:

Abu Hiam says that they had never heard of anyone in Madinah who provided more transport for people proceeding in the path of Allah than Hakim bin Hizm RadhiAllahu anhu. Two Bedouins once came to Madinah to ask for someone to provide them with transport to proceed in the path of Allah. When they were directed to Hakim bin Hizm RadhiAllahu anhu they approached him while he was with his family. When he asked them what they required and they duly informed him, he told them not to be hasty and to wait until he comes out to see them. (When he came out) He was wearing clothing that was brought from Egypt. It resembled a spider’s web and cost four dirhams. He took his staff with him and his slaves also accompanied him. Each time he passed by a rubbish dump he used the end of his staff to pick up any piece of cloth that could be used to patch the satchels of the camels going out in the path of Allah. He would then dust off the cloth and hand it over to his slave saying: “Keep this piece of cloth to mend the satchels.”

One of the Bedouins said to the other: “Oh dear! Save us from him! By Allah! All this man has with him are pieces of cloth from rubbish dumps.” The other said: “Shame on you! Do not be hasty. Let us first wait and see.” Hakim bin Hizm RadhiAllahu anhu then took them to the market place where he saw two large, fat pregnant she camels. He purchased them along with their supplies and said to his slave: “Use the  pieces of cloth to mend any of the satchels that need mending.” Thereafter he loaded on the camels some food , wheat and fat, Furthermore he gave the two men money for their expenses and made over the camels to them. The one Bedouin then said to his companion: “By Allah! I have never seen a better collector of cloth pieces than this man!”

…Sayyiduna Bilal RadhiAllahu anhu…

…the sonorous rolling waves of Adhan pulse across Madinatun Nabi during these winter days as the thrum and whirr of air conditioners no longer pervades the air space…the acoustics from the Masjid Nabawi Muaththins is clearly audible above all the local masaajid…vibrating deep within the heart and soul…hardly an Adhan is called without thoughts of how it must have been when Sayyiduna Bilal RadhiAllahu anhu was calling people to prayer…calling them to success…the voice most loved by our Blessed Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam announcing the times for Salat…the Haram Adhan pierces the heart…so imagine the effect of the heavenly sound of Bilal’s voice…how the people of Madinah cried upon hearing him once again after his brief return from Shams the following the time of Al-Mustafa SallAllahu alaihi wasallam…imagine!

Sayyid al-Mu’azzineen (Leader of the Mu’azzins), Imam al-Aashiqeen, The great devotee, faithful companion and Mu’azzin of the beloved Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam, Hadrat Sayyiduna Bilal al-Habashi Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anhu is a famous and exalted Sahabi who accepted Islam in its early days in Makkah al-Mukarramah. When he accepted Islam, the non-believers placed great difficulties upon him which he bore with great forbearance in his youth. His father’s name was Rabah and his mother’s name was Hamamah.
His birth place is Abyssinia (Ethiopia) and this is why he is known as Habshi (the old name for Abyssinia is Habsh). Born in the late 6th century, the preferred view is that Bilal Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anhu was 43 years old at the time of Hijra but it has been suggested by some that he could have been as old as 53.
He was either a slave of a woman in Makkah who had made Umayyah bin Khalaf her agent in the matters of Hadrat Bilal or Umayya Ibn Khalaf himself when he accepted Islam. The Kaafirs of Makkah persecuted him severely. When Hadrat Abu Bakr Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anhu came to know about the pain and anguish which he underwent at the hands of the Kuffaar, he bought him and set him free. One of the many emancipated slaves of Abu Bakr Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anhu, Bilal Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anhu was known for his beautiful voice and was given the honour by the Holy Prophet Muhammad SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam of being the first Mu’azzin of Islam. He remained constantly in the company of beloved Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam. He was at the service of the needs of beloved Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam. Muhaddith Hakim and Hafidh Abu Nu’aym also regarded him as one of the Ashaab of al-Suffah.
After he had accepted Islam, he participated with beloved Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam in the battle of Badr and in all other battles. He called the Adhaan and he was the Mu’azzin of Masjid al-Nabawi as long as he remained with beloved Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam. His greatness and excellence is mentioned in numerous books of Ahadith.

One day at the time of Fajr, beloved Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam asked Hadrat Bilal Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anhu, ‘O Bilal, Show me one action that you have done after accepting Islam, whose virtue is above all other actions, because I have heard your footsteps in Jannah’. Hadrat Bilal Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anhu explains that I have not done any action whose virtue is more than the others. But it is true, that during the day or night, whenever I made Wudhu, I made it my duty to read some Nafl Salaah, and from amongst the Salaah I read, I verily read Tahiyyatul Wudhu (Salaat after Wudhu)” when beloved Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam heard this, he said that it was because of this action that he had attained such status.

…Maulana Rumi RahmatuLlahi alaihi penned the following poetic lines expressing his reaction to the torture and horror that Sayyiduna Bilal RadhiAllahu anhu endured at the hands of his Jewish master until he was freed by Abu Bakr Siddique RadhiAllahu anhu:

When Abu Bakr advised him towards silence and secrecy,
Bilal repented again,
But when love overwhelmed, he swallowed the repentance.
It is the message of the troubled heart.
Without You there can be neither peace nor comfort.

Beloved Mustafa embraced Bilal and held him against his chest. The ecstasy Bilal felt! Who can ever imagine that?

…Insha’Allah we are all blessed with hearing Sayyiduna Bilal RadhiAllahu anhu’s melodious voice when we are in Jannah…along with Prophet Dawud singing from the Zabur and our Beloved Prophet SallAllahu alauhu wasallam reciting Qur’an…culminating with Allah Ta’ala directly presenting us with His Divine Words…AMEEN AMEEN AMEEN!!

…may we reflect upon the honour and dignity of the esteemed first Muaththin…his unflinching testimony to the Oneness of Allah Ta’ala…and be inspired to boost our own proclamation of faith at this time of the anniversary of his demise…Insha’Allah…

…Dhul Hijjah 1432…

…the final month of the Islamic calendar…Dhul Hijjah…containing the blessed ten days when righteous actions are more beloved to Allah than any other days…

It has been narrated that fasting one of these days is equal to the reward of fasting for a whole year and standing in one of these nights in prayer is equal to standing on Laylat al-Qadr. Also the reward for actions in these days is multiplied seven hundred times.

…this is also the month to reflect upon the greatness of two of our Shining Stars, Sayyidna ‘Umar and Sayyidna ‘Uthman RadhiAllahu anhumaa:

Both their hearts were pierced with Hidayah, stepping from darkness into light during the month of Dhul Hijjah, both were from noble and influential tribes but both denounced the glitter of this Dunya, both are from the Ashurah Mubasharah, two of the ten promised Jannah. With our Beloved Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam they both stood on Jabal Uhud when it trembled, fought in battles alongside him, sat in palm groves, drank from wells, dined in his company, devotedly studied at his feet, both heard the pebbles hymning Shahadah, both shared the highest degrees of humility, modesty, asceticism, piety, forbearance generosity, knowledge and justice. Both were from the rightly guided Caliphs, both had verses of the Qur’an Majeed revealed relating to them, both initiated extensions to Masjid Nabawi, both met their martyrdom during the month of Dhul Hijjah. Volumes have been penned on these luminous and faithful residents of Paradise. Stars that will continue to shine till the last heart beats in this temporary existence. May we be guided by the noble examples of ‘Umar ibn Al-Khattab, Abu Hafs and ‘Uthman ibn Affan, Dhul Noorayn RadhiAllahu anhuma.

Insha’Allah return to the Shining Stars archive for Ahadith, stories and sayings of these two noble predecessors RadhiAllahu anhumaa…accounts that inspire hearts to emulate their wisdom and adopt their ways, especially during these blessed ten days when righteous actions are more beloved to Allah than any other days…and when rewards for actions in these days are multiplied seven hundred times…SubhanAllah!

Allah give us the ability to fill these days with acts of goodness that bring us closer to Him. Allah help us to follow in the footsteps of His Chosen One in all that we do inwardly and outwardly, may Allah bless him and his family, Companions and all those that follow him until the end of time.

O Allah send blessings upon our Master Muhammad as much as the eyes see, as much as the earth becomes verdant after rainfall, the number of people making Hajj and Umra, making the talbiya, shaving their heads, making tawaf around the Ancient House and kissing the Stone and upon his family and companions in every instant for ever the number of Your creation, to Your satisfaction, the weight of Your throne and the amount of ink of Your words.

…Ahlus Suffa…take two…part two…

The Most Famous People of the Bench

Abu Huraira, Abu Dharr al-Ghifâri, Ka’b ibn Mâlik, Salmân al-Fârisi, Hanzala ibn Abi ‘?mir, Hudhaifa ibn al-Yamân, Suhaib ibn Sinân al-Rûmi, Bilâl ibn Rabâh, Abu Sa’îd al-Khudrî, Abdullah ibn Mas’ûd.

Mus’ab ibn Umayr:

The Messenger, upon him be peace, said about Mus’ab ibn ‘Umayr when he saw him in a sheepskin: ‘Look at this (man). Allah The Exalted illumined his heart. I saw him in Makkah walking arrogantly in a robe that was brought from him for perhaps two hundred dirhams. When the love of Allah and His Messenger descended upon his heart, it transformed him into what you now see.’ (Al-Tirmidhi and al-Bayhaqi)

There is a lesson for all of us about the true ‘sunna’ (Prophetic way) which is found in Zuhd (not attaching oneself to this temporal world and preferring the Next in all our dealings).

How did they live?

Some of them gave up lives of wealth and learnt to do with very little. An example was Mus’ab ibn ‘Umayr.

They were discouraged from begging. An example is the advice given to Hakim bin Hazam to collect firewood.

The Messenger, upon him be peace, said to Hakim ibn Hazam: ‘O Hakim, this wealth is like sweet fruit. The one who takes it from the generosity of the self finds it has a blessing. But the one who takes it by forcing someone finds no blessing at all. He would be like the one who eats and is never satisfied.’ He then said: ‘Let one of you collect wood for a living. It is better than asking someone who asks another man, whether he gives or not.’

The Prophet, upon him be peace, encouraged the community to support and help them. He led by example. An example is his sharing of a glass of milk with all of the Ahl al-Suffa.

This can be related to the principles behind ‘big issue’ sellers and social enterprise models and have relevance to how we ‘enable’ socially disabled groups and include marginalised groups while maintaining their dignity and self respect.

Their role in society:

The Ahl al-Suffa were responsible for transmitting the largest number of hadîth.

They played a major part in jihâd campaigns.

They were sent as teachers to communities that had recently embraced Islam.

Sharing our resources with the poor

There are two relevant hadîth found in al-Bukhâri related to this:

Narrated Abu ‘Uthman: ‘Abdur Rahman bin Abi Bakr said, “The Suffa Companions were poor people and the Prophet said, ‘Whoever has food for two persons should take a third one from them (Suffa companions). And whosoever has food for four persons he should take one or two from them’ Abu Bakr took three men and the Prophet took ten of them.”

‘Abdur Rahman added, my father my mother and I were there (in the house). (The sub-narrator is in doubt whether ‘Abdur Rahman also said, ‘My wife and our servant who was common for both my house and Abu Bakr’s house). Abu Bakr took his supper with the Prophet and remained there till the ‘Isha’ prayer was offered. Abu Bakr went back and stayed with the Prophet till the Prophet took his meal and then Abu Bakr returned to his house after a long portion of the night had passed. Abu Bakr’s wife said, ‘What detained you from your guests (or guest)?’ He said, ‘Have you not served them yet?’ She said, ‘They refused to eat until you come. The food was served for them but they refused.”
‘Abdur Rahman added, “I went away and hid myself (being afraid of Abu Bakr) and in the meantime he (Abu Bakr) called me, ‘O Ghunthar (a harsh word)!’ and also called me bad names and abused me and then said (to his family), ‘Eat. No welcome for you.’ Then (the supper was served). Abu Bakr took an oath that he would not eat that food. The narrator added: By Allah, whenever any one of us (myself and the guests of Suffa companions) took anything from the food, it increased from underneath. We all ate to our fill and the food was more than it was before its serving.

(Bukhâri, Volume 1, Book 10, Number 576)

And:

Narrated Abu Huraira: By Allah except Whom none has the right to- be worshipped, (sometimes) I used to lay (sleep) on the ground on my liver (abdomen) because of hunger, and (sometimes) I used to bind a stone over my belly because of hunger. One day I sat by the way from where they (the Prophet and h is companions) used to come out. When Abu Bakr passed by, I asked him about a Verse from Allah’s Book and I asked him only that he might satisfy my hunger, but he passed by and did not do so. Then Umar passed by me and I asked him about a Verse from Allah’s Book, and I asked him only that he might satisfy my hunger, but he passed by without doing so. Finally Abu-l-Qasim (the Prophet ) passed by me and he smiled when he saw me, for he knew what was in my heart and on my face. He said, “O Aba Hirr (Abu Huraira)!” I replied, “Labbaik, O Allah’s Apostle!” He said to me, “Follow me.” He left and I followed him.

Then he entered the house and I asked permission to enter and was admitted. He found milk in a bowl and said, “From where is this milk?” They said, “It has been presented to you by such-and-such man (or by such and such woman).” He said, “O Aba Hirr!” I said, “Labbaik, O Allah’s Apostle!” He said, “Go and call the people of Suffa to me.” These people of Suffa were the guests of Islam who had no families, nor money, nor anybody to depend upon, and whenever an object of charity was brought to the Prophet , he would send it to them and would not take anything from it, and whenever any present was given to him, he used to send some for them and take some of it for himself. The order off the Prophet upset me, and I said to myself, “How will this little milk be enough for the people of As-Suffa?” thought I was more entitled to drink from that milk in order to strengthen myself, but behold! The Prophet came to order me to give that milk to them. I wondered what will remain of that milk for me, but anyway, I could not but obey Allah and His Apostle so I went to the people of As-Suffa and called them, and they came and asked the Prophet’s permission to enter. They were admitted and took their seats in the house.

The Prophet said, “O Aba-Hirr!” I said, “Labbaik, O Allah’s Apostle!” He said, “Take it and give it to them.” So I took the bowl (of Milk) and started giving it to one man who would drink his fill and return it to me, whereupon I would give it to another man who, in his turn, would drink his fill and return it to me, and I would then offer it to another man who would drink his fill and return it to me. Finally, after the whole group had drunk their fill, I reached the Prophet who took the bowl and put it on his hand, looked at me and smiled and said. “O Aba Hirr!” I replied, “Labbaik, O Allah’s Apostle!” He said, “There remain you and I.” I said, “You have said the truth, O Allah’s Apostle!” He said, “Sit down and drink.” I sat down and drank. He said, “Drink,” and I drank. He kept on telling me repeatedly to drink, till I said, “No. by Allah Who sent you with the Truth, I have no space for it (in my stomach).” He said, “Hand it over to me.” When I gave him the bowl, he praised Allah and pronounced Allah’s Name on it and drank the remaining milk.

(al-Bukhâri Volume 8, Book 76, Number 459)

Abu Huraira, the most prominent of the Ahl al-Suffa was the most prolific narrator of hadîth, narrating 5874 hadîth. Over 800 Companions and Followers narrated from him.

The Prophet, sent many of the Ahl al-Suffa out to teach, some facing danger as in the case of the Battle of Bir Ma’una where 70 teachers from the Ahl al-Suffa were killed.

In the light of what we have said:

How do we encourage the marginalised to use the mosque?

What ‘outreach’ services should the mosque offer to the poor/ disadvantaged?

What should mosques do to welcome refugees?

What education/ dawah programmes should mosques offer?

What facilities should those new to Islam expect from the mosque?

Shaykh Abdul Aziz used this drawing of Masjid Nabawi in his presentation, I have added dots for the sake of clarity: lime is the position of the raised platform, the Dukka al-Aghwat where Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam would receive formal delegations, pink the place of the original Suffa and green where it was moved after the first expansion of the Masjid.

May Allah revive within us the spirit of the Ahl al-Suffa, Ameen.

Sincere appreciation to Shaykh Abdul Aziz for giving permission to post his notes. May Allah Ta’ala shower him and the group he is about to accompany for Umrah with the choicest of blessings and fill their entire visit with Nur, Ameen.

Ameen.

…Ahlus Suffa…take two…part one…

Shaykh Abdul Aziz Ahmed, may Allah Ta’ala sanctify his soul and protect him and his family, has recently been touring the UK promoting his new book ‘Guide to Visiting Makka and Madina’ (Scroll down to see poster and locations they have been, and ‘hot off the press’ and ‘blindness’ that share snippets of the heartfelt work Kitaba and Dirasa do for the differently abled, Masha’Allah).

As part of the book launch program Shaykh Abdul Aziz delivered a presentation entitled ‘People of the Bench’ which he has generously consented to his notes appearing here, Alhumdulillah.

What was the ‘Bench’?

The Suffa, bench or veranda, was a shelter at the back of the Prophet’s Mosque where people who had no where to stay would live.

Talha al-Basri said: ‘Whoever came to Madina and knew someone, would stay with them. Whoever did not know anyone would stay at the Suffa. I was one of those who knew no one and stayed at the Suffa. There were two men who would come every day with a measure of dates sent by the Messenger of Allah.’

Suffa with a damma on the Sâd and shadda on the fâ was a shelter at the back of the mosque. For this reason, People of the Veranda may have been a more appropriate title.

The word ‘sofa’, meaning a raised section of a floor covered with carpets and cushions’ was introduced into the English language from Turkish around 1620.

This is not connected linguistically, as some suggest, to the word Sufi as they are from different etymological roots. However, the practices of the Ahl al-Suffa influenced early Islamic spirituality including those associated with Sufism like Abu Abdul Rahman al-Sulami and Al-Hujwairi (known as Datta Ganj Baksh in Urdu) but also those opposed to Sufism like Ibn Taymiyyah.

Rifat Atay writing about one of my own teachers said, ‘Gülen is often mistaken for a Sufi when in fact he can be considered a member of the Suffa.’ (quoted from Reviving the Suffa tradition p459)

Talha ibn Abdullah al-Basri was a Companion who related hadîth from Uthmân ibn Affân. He was appointed governor over Sajistân where he died in 63H. He uses the word ‘Arîf’ means master or someone who takes cares of the affairs of people.

Some say that the raised platform (Dukkat al-Aghwât) is the place of the Suffa but this is not true as this platform was outside of the original mosque. Qadi Ayâd said that the Prophet, upon him be peace, said that when the Qibla was changed he, upon him be peace, ordered a roof to be built at the back of the mosque and this shelter was known as the Suffa.

Ibn Hajr al-Asqalâni said in Fath al-Bâri that the Suffa was a shelter prepared at the back of the Prophet’s Mosque to house strangers and those who had no family.

The place and role of the Suffa is not an accident of history but based on divinely guided principle with eternal lessons. The Prophet, upon him be peace, designed the Mosque and helped to construct it.

Al-Dukka is an Arabic word for ‘a rectangular raised platform usually made of wood where men who gather and sit’. Al-Aghwât is the plural of the Turkish word Agha which means ruler or shaykh or master. It is the place where those guarding the Prophetic chambers would sit. The first to use this platform was Nur al-Dîn al-Zanki who died in 569H/ 1184 CE. He appointed 12 people to this role. Salahuddin al-Ayyubi increased it to twenty four and since then the numbers have risen and fallen sometimes reaching into the hundreds.

Abu Huraira mentioned he saw 70 People of the Bench, among them were some wearing a ridâ, others wearing izâr or a kisâ, some whose garment reached half way up their shins and others reached their ankles. They would hold their garment in their hands so that they did not expose their private areas.’ (al-Bukhâri in the Book of Salah, Chapter on Sleeping in the Mosque)

These 70 are different to the 70 People of the Bench who were killed at the Battle of the Well of Ma’una as these were killed before he embraced Islam.

Ibn Arabi, Abu Nuaym and Abu Abdul Rahmân al-Sulami listed the People of the Bench but their lists were different. Ibn Taymiya examined the lists and said that there were between 600 and 700 Companions.

According to Ibn Sa’d, the only person given special permission to live in the Suffa with his family was Abdullah ibn Mas’ûd. (al-Tabaqât vol V. ii. P152)

Send not away those who call on their Lord morning and evening, seeking His face.

(Al-An’âm 6:52)

This verse was revealed in respect of Salmân al-Farisi and Khabâb ibn al-Arat. A group of Arab noblemen came and found the Prophet, upon him be peace, sitting with Bilal, Suhaib Salmân al-Farisi and Khabâb ibn al-Arat and other poor people from the Ahl al-Suffa. It was suggested to the Prophet, upon him be peace, that he should have different sittings for the noblemen and the poor as this was hampering the ‘call’ to Islam as some new Muslims from nobility were uncomfortable in this situation. The verse was revealed to make it clear that this should not be done.

It was also said that it was revealed regarding the prayer, where it was suggested that the Ahl al-Suffa pray behind the noblemen during the congregational prayer. The verse points out that the Ahl al-Suffa were not only busy with the compulsory prayer but spent their time in worship and are therefore more deserving of praying at the front than others.

This principle can be linked to tendency among some events organisers to provide ‘special access’ to shaykhs for people of mean and limit access for those who are marginalised including the poor, disabled, mentally unwell, etc. This should be compared to the statement of ‘Umar ibn al-Khattâb when he was ruler and Khabâb entered a consultation meeting. He stood in honour of him and said, ‘no one is more worthy of joining this assembly than you except Bilâl ibn Rabah.’
